Folks:

I found this commentary from Shaun Wilkie very interesting, to say the least:

The match is of course interesting as well, but listen to Shaun's commentary at this point, which is from a traditional 9-ball'ers perspective that now actually plays straight pool on a regular basis.

Good ammo to feed any of your pool colleagues that play 9ball, who may think 14.1 is an "easy" game "because you can shoot at any ball."

14.1 is the Best

Sean,
Thanks for posting. I have only had time to watch 32 mins. of the match so far and totally enjoyed it. Will finish up a little later. Not only are the commentators statements right on about the difference between 9-ball & 14.1 but they are doing a great job pertaining to the match. They are talking about shots & strategies of each player. I get so sick of listening to 9 ball matches and they are talking about what they had for dinner, etc. Thanks Sean.

PS: the first rack was unbelievable on how deep both players went into the rack trading safes back & forth. Now, that is what you call defense!

on all of the video commentary i've heard, Shaun is a great ambassador for straight pool.

he has street cred with the young 9-ball crowd, and he's very friendly and pleasant.

last i knew, his high run was 199.

And J.R. has such great knowledge of the game of 14.1, it is a pleasure listening to him. Some of the best commentary that year was J.R. with George Fels on some of the matches.

When I got to the tournament that year, Charlie Williams called me at the airport and asked me if I could fill in for a player who cancelled. I said OK, and as I was getting ready to get on the table, the player called back and said he could make it after all. So Alan Hopkins got to play instead of me.
But just as I was being relieved of my borrowed vest and borrowed cue from Ed Culhane, J.R. introduced himself and talked me into helping do a little commentary. I had never done any before and did not know who the heck J.R. was, but I got to find out how much he knows about straight pool while doing the commentary with him on the Lombardo/Cohen and the Martin/Ortmann match. Very nice commentary indeed by the Inside Pool crew.
