I seen a few proud owners of these cues in Vegas. Just got a 'hmmmmm, nice cue' outta me. What do you say when someone is showing you a disgusting looking cue, and there proud of it?

You have to build it this way to get the weight within a resonable range, assuming you want to have a solid one-piece butt. I've seen a few of these under different names and it always seemed to me that Pool was the wrong market for this design. They ought to build these as Snooker cues, as this market love cues with thin handles and shafts, stiff and hard hitting with no wraps. The weight is the only problem, as typical Snooker cues are never more than 18oz, but they are also usually only 57" long, so perhaps this shorter length would help.
The only other cue maker I've see use Dymondwood to any extent is the inimitable Arnot Q. Wadsworth in his "Rainbow" cue range, to which I've always been partial from a cosmetic viewpoint (I've no idea how they play.) It is interesting to note all these cues have wraps, which leads me to speculate he is only using the Dymondwood for the forearm and butt with a normal Maple or other light wood handle dowel to keep the weight down.
I have to agree that particular one is pretty ugly but there is a dealer local to me and he has a few that are actually much better color combinations. Although, the design is still very odd the ones I tried hit pretty damn solid I have to admit. They are a laminated butt and shaft so they pretty much hit stiff like a Predator. I don't think I could ever get used to one just because it's so non 'traditional' but he does sell some cues. I think it's the 'you either love them or hate them' syndrome.
