I've heard some stories about forum members meeting each other and I thought I'd share a story about the first person I met from the boards...
Back in the summer of 2005 I deployed to Iraq for 4 months. On my way back home we had to stop in Qatar, which is the hub for all traffic going in and out of the desert, to wait on a flight back home. We were going to be there for a few days and naturally my first thought was to find a place to play pool. Well I take that back... my first thought was to get some alcohol in my system since it was allowed there. After being in Iraq, playing on bad tables for 4 months, it was a welcome surprise to see nice tables in the community center.
I found out that the next morning they were going to have a pool tournament so I thought I'd show these guys a thing or two about shooting pool... I made my way easily into the finals to face off against a guy I would later come to know as easy-e who is a member of this forum. He then proceeded to show me a thing or two about pool... So after he beat and the hand shakes were over it came time to get our prizes for 1st & 2nd... 1st place was a somewhat dated cd player and 2nd was a 1-hour full body massage. What can I say... sometimes it pays to lose. Getting my first "Full-body" massage after 4 months in Iraq is a whole other story which I'll gladly spare all of you.
easy-e and I played pool for a while he entertained me with stories of working at hardtimes and a chance encounter with our Keither with the ether. One very humorous thing that happened was after we went to the chowhall for dinner that night we were heading back and someone forgot there reflective belt that were mandatory at all times. easy-e and a buddy of his then proceeded to "share" a single reflective belt around their waist garnering many stares with me following them in balls of laughter.
Well I ended up making my way back home and never heard of or talked to easy-e again until a chance meeting last march when I went to the Bar Table Championship in Reno. I was sitting down being bored at a 3-6 limit hold-em table at the Sands and I overheard some guy talking to another player at the table and he looked vaguely familiar. Finally after a while I asked the guy if he was in the Air Force and he said yeah he still was. Then we proceeded to remember where we met and whatnot. He ended up sitting down at the table and struck out trying to pick up some middle-aged Asian card dealer lady. Trying to lure her into his trap by promising her a steak dinner. It was obvious he didn't have much game.
This turned out to be a lot more longwinded than I had planned.
