If you want to improve your stroke, you should get the artistic pool program of 40 shots, which is soon expanding to over 150 shots. Ever since I started doing trick shots, and practicing these artistic shots, my stroke has improved. My 9-ball game has gone down because I don't practice it, but when I play, I notice that I have to ease off on my english a lot because I am putting twice as much spin on the CB as I did before I started with artistic pool.

The program is available online at www.artisticpool.org. You can also order a hard-copy from Tom Rossman. Ordering instructions are on the website.

Go to this site and look at some of the shots. The nice thing is that each set of 5 shots works on a different part of your stroke. 5 draw shots, 5 follow shots, 5 jump shots, 5 masse shots, etc.

Here's a slight artistic variation:

Taking crawdaddio's set-up, we jump the cue ball over the 8 ball, with lots of reverse. We pocket the 8 ball in the lower right hand corner pocket, and follow it in the same pocket with the cue ball.

Once you have accomplished this, return here for the next 39 shots.

Here's the new variation I've been doing........

Both balls frozen to the rail.
I move the ob further and further up as I start hittin' 'em.
Only made it once with the ob at about three and a half diamonds up though.

That shot, and the version where you follow through actually only tell you that you had the balls set up straight and that you hit the object ball accurately.

Unintended side may effect the result a little but not much. You can show this my playing the shot with lots of side and getting the same result.

The actual smoothness or straigtness of the cueing will make negligable difference to the result of this shot, so long as you hit the cue ball pretty much in the right spot and it hits the object ball in the centre.
