International Players and American Cues

I know there is always a lot of discussion on american made cues as opposed to cues over seas. As I watch (in 5 second bits) the International 10 ball championships, I wonder if the international players who don't come to the states regularly play with American cues. Do they view american cues, like we view Italian sport cars or suits? Like oh you play with an American cue....wow. Or do they in their respective countries also have cuemakers with American custom cue quality, i.e. the ICA.

I'm from Europe. A lot of people play here with american made cues (most production cues) and this is not something special. Some people could be a bit impressed when it comes to custome cues, wich is not very common here. Otherwise, I've never heard any comments in a pool room about the production country of a cue. Most of the players don't care.

And yes, there are some talented cuemakers here too (Eurowest, TC Cues...).

I did a poll in belgium with the top players to see how much people know about american custom cues.

not one person ever heard of Scruggs, Balabushka, cognoscenti, etc....
They only know production cue: predator, etc...

I think i'm the only belgium player with a custom cue from the states. Frey fancy sneaky with leather wrap and a sniper, and i love it.

Quite a few players from UK use American cues..on the pro tour i know of 5 people using Wayne Holmes custom, i have a James White Custom, Daryl Peach uses a Viking i think...Karl Boyes and Darren Appleton use Predator 5k series..alot of people use Predator Shafts, there are a few other customs people use like Kenny Murell(SP?)..i personally view the American Cues as the best you can buy, there are a few English Cue makers but they specialise in Snooker/English pool cues like the one's Tony Drago/Mark Gray use.

in england no-one really knows about cues, but that's more to do with the fact nobody really knows anything about pool. The regular players will have heard of predator, and maybe meucci but that's about it.

Speak for yourself Worried Beef, Thats quite a broad statement your making there, "nobody know anything about pool", your quite wrong maybe people who don't play won't know about American cues but i know for a fact if you ask every player on the GB9BallTour a vast majority will of heard of more than 2 cue makes....We have one of the biggest and respected cue collectors in the world in the U.k Simon D'vali where alot of people on these forums (Wanted/Forsale forum) will of heard or met him....i would say about 70% of the GB9ball tour use Predator Shafts and about 20% use custom American cues.

yeah sorry you must have misunderstood I know the people on the GB9ball Tour know, and of course I've heard of simon and most of the uk players. I was referring to general players, not the pro's.

I just came across a bit disgruntled because amongst the general public nobody does anything about pool. When you explain to them that it's not the game in the pub, all they then think is "oh it's the game with the huge pockets that's easy and stupid and not as good as snooker". :(

Thats really why I can't watch pool on TV although I love to play it every day. I could watch billiards and snooker, it just looks better on TV.
Oh, I almost forgot, Americans make the best pool cues, no contest.:D

Yes! That one!!:D

I play with a Falcon and break with a Dufferin :) I have a Schmelke on order, but they're quite close to Canada ;)

I couldn't imagine not having the long list of top choice cue makers to look at their cues is much like visiting an art show for me. It's a shame their products don't reach out farther across the borders when all it takes is a click on the internet

Isnt the question rather pointless? Arent most of them playing with cues from whomever is sponsoring them? Alison Fisher plays with a Cuetec,
Charlie Williams with a Predator, Mika Immonen with a Mezz. Thorsten Hohmann plays with a Lucasi. Ralf Souquet plays with a Predator I think, not with a cue from his father.

I think the question is for the lesser known players outside the states not the sponsered monsters.

I would say:

Taiwan - Southwest country
Japan - Lot of US customs
UK - mainly Predator

Only the Philippines really has a "custom cue industry", and the quality is v varied!
