Introduce Someone To Pool

There have been many threads about the future of pool. It has always been interesting to me to watch a new person come into the pool hall and have experienced players try to get their money. Many times they never come back.

If you want to help the popularity of pool---introduce a new young person to pool. Bring them to the pool hall, show them a little about the games, and make it a good experience. Invite them back.

We can all help in 2007.

Some kids in my neighborhood discovered the pool table in my basement last summer. It cuts down on my practice time a little but it sure is entertaining watching these little ones with cues taller than they are! For anyone that takes pool very seriously, invite a couple kids to "play" for a few minutes and you'll quickly be reminded that pool is a really fun GAME!

Bravo! This though should also appear in the pool-related New Year's resolution thread, too. Not only should we strive to intoduce others to pool, but we should strive to help those who play casually get more excited about and derive greater fulfillment from the game.

This is absolutely correct! At the Side Pocket in St. Thomas, where both Andy and I first took up the game, there were a number of guys who took time to give me some tips, and they watched my development closely. Only after a certain point did they say, "OK boy, you've beat up on the non-players enough. Now it's time to step up and play some bigger boys." Of course, that's how they started taking my money (for a while), but the point is that they make sure to wait until my game had progressed to a certain point and until the game really had my nose open. The point is that while all (or most) of us like action, there is no reason to pluck the fruits before they are ripe! Bring the kids along and show them the game. You'll still get action from them in time, but by that point you'll be be seasoning them (albeit with some tuition) instead of simply driving them from the pool hall and the game.

BTW, best of the season to you and yours, Andy! I'll drink a glass of guavaberry for you!
