Hi All,

I got an IPOD for the holiday (to use for pool), and I was wondering, is it OK to wear an IPOD or musical device when playing/competing at league or in tournaments?

If someone you where playing in either would you com[plain or want to complain? I know that when I practice it would be nice to shut out the world around, but is that OK durring a match, I don't know.

I personally do not get the idea behind the IPOD, but I am Jurassic in my thinking. I still play Pool with a Stick...:)

iPods are great to "tune out" distractions when practicing or in tournaments. Ive used mine on league night and in small tournaments, no one has complained.

I wear mine whenever I play, and have worn it subbing in the VNEA league here. It depends on the tour and/or tournament director. As for leagues, I don't believe there is anything written in the rules about it.

I think it's ridiculous to ban them anyway. It's not an aiming system, and it has nothing to do with being able to hear your opponent because unless they're standing directly in front of me, I probably won't hear what they say.

Sorry for ranting.

I have two Nanos. The sound quality is excellent. I'm very impressed.

iPods are OK while playing in tournaments at Hard Times in Sacramento CA.

As the tournament director, if I can hear the 'noise' coming from the ear piece, I just tell the player, either turn it down or turn it off.

I don't have the IPod, but I do use the Zen XTRA with 60GB. I love that all 1300 CD's fit on to this and can go everywhere I do. Plus, some pool halls have real bad music, and it is nice to tune that out. I've never been told to take it off during a tournament or at any other time.

I almost won't even go to the pool room any more without mine. I noticed I practice so much longer when I have one in my ears. I can't tell you how nice it is not to have to hear "Hotel California" anymore. In about 13 years being in the pool room, I have probably heard that played on the juke box seriously 250 times. The ipod is invaluable for that. As far as tournaments go, I saw many players at the US Open this year with headphones on while playing in their matches.

I just got an Ipod Shuffle for Christmas from my wife and am very pleased with everything about it. I have been downloading my favorite motivational songs for a while in anticipation of the day that I would have a nice Ipod... I can't wait to play while wearing it. It will block the Latin music that constantly gets played where I practice.

Just got through listening to Nazereth's 'Hair of the Dog' on the player. If that isn't a billiards motivational song, I don't know what is!!!

I remember one time there was a scheme to coach a non-one pocket player and back him against a 1p player, using a system with earphones that looked like it was coming from a CD player. The device was from Radio Shack, and the other player wore the transmitter/mic. It never happened, but I guess that is why it might be banned in some tournaments. With the IPT and the advent of Cornermen, that would be a moot point.

Some people can concentrate better with music going instead of the usual tournament noise and doing that takes off some of the pressure. Kind of like concentrating on an imaginary next ball when shooting the 9.

Ipods

Although okay for practice, in league play and tournaments,
players can be forced to take them off because if the
opposing player calls a foul on a shot, you must
acknowledge the foul, per the rules. Also, if the 8 is
sunk on the break, and it has to be decided to respot
the 8 or to completely rebreak the rack. I have seen
players complain to league operators or tournament directors
about players with headphones on. Personally, I do not think
they belong when playing league or a tournament or even
a money match. BTW, I have never seen someone wear
headphones when playing a money match, THEY KNOW BETTER
THAN TO DO THAT, LEST THEY LOSE THEIR MONEY.

you hit a nerve there!! All I ever hear at my home room is Hotel California and that "she caught me one night at the ho-tel" song. I've probably heard those 2 songs 250 times in the past MONTH!

one of these days I'm going to pop a 50 in that freakin jukebox and play bohemian rhapsody 100 times and see how those sick bastards like it!!!

I'm using mine at Valley Forge!

Last year's Open Amateur Champion -- B.J. Ussery -- used headphones the whole tournament.

My wife and kids bought me the 60GB iPod photo and I'm thinking about wearing it this year when I play out there. About 10 years ago I used a little portable cassette player when playing in a tournament and I loved it....and I played well while wearing it.......it actually stops sharking (you can't hear snide little remarks from either your opponent or the railbirds!!). I guess I better practice with it first.....but I think there's nothing wrong or disrespectful about wearing/using the iPod while playing. I won't have the volume SO LOUD that I can't hear someone talking to me.....just loud enough to hear the music....but not be too distracting. In fact, I think I'm going to go try it out now....make sure I'm comfortable walking around the table, getting down on shots, make sure it's secure on my person, wires under the shirt, etc..........I'll let you guys know how I like it.........

As stated a few months ago in another thread, I have a 8 hour MP3 of Bert Kinister whispering softly, "You control the cueball, you control the cash"!

I would have to say that I disagree with being able to wear any kind of earplugs/IPod/Nano/whatever while playing pool in tournament conditions. What if you're wearing this device and you don't hear your opponent ask for a timeout to call over a ref or to say that they wanted to get out of their seat to look at the table condition for a frozen ball or something?

It is funny that this should come up. Last week I was in the semi finals of a handicapped weekly tournament and was given one game and the eight ball as my spot. In about the ninth game I called the eight in the corner and because the other player had his I Pod on he said he did not hear me. We have played several times before and he knew I would not try to sneak anything by him so we just played on, I did however make sure he watched me later when I shot the eight again. The tournament director told me later that it would be the other players responsibilty to watch his opponent if he could not hear him call his shot because of his headphones.

It doesn't matter

I've tried it and it's ok. But when I got used to it I found that felt I needed it to get instroke. So, I stopped. I try to pull my drive from inside. I have a friend that would never play without his ipod. It was a pain. He could never hear anything. We would play a ring game and we were always calling his name to shoot. He would ask the same questions over and over. When he wore them he wouldn't pay attention to anything else only when he was at the table. When I was at the table you can hear the house music and then his music. I know him and it wasn't meant to be a shart, but it was . He lost a lot of action becuase of it. Today, I will not play anyone for money if they wore headphones. I wouldn't say anything in a tournament unil I had to repeat something he / she should have heard. I go to tournament's to compete. It's a pain in the A** when you play someone not on the same sheet of music with you and the game.

You guys crack me up! :D For me it s that Never Again by Nickleback. They just won't leave a good song to brew. Everyone has to overplay the good stuff.

OR Maybe we hang out and practice so long that we get exposed to it more than most...................NAH! "Those sick bastards!" LMAO!

I'm kind of an on-again/off-again user. But when I do use it, I only use one ear piece and never have it on that loud. It still works great that way and I never have problems hearing anyone. Just a suggetion. I would agree it should not be necessayto jump up and run over and tap someone on the shoulder for a call or whatever. Although if they make a double hit that you could hear whether you saw it or not...man, I sense trouble brewing there...;)
