IPT Million-Dollar Tour: The savior of American pool?

Well I've seen "shady" mentioned.....the guy's putting up $150,000 on this matchup, I'm sure he expects to make money on the tv revenue,so what's shady about that? Do you figure he's going to make LOTS n LOTS of money off of his "membership fee"? He's a BILLIONAIRE,he probably goes through more than he will make on membership fees every week at lunch. Will it work, will it survive? That will depend on if it makes money or maintains his interest. Grady said it should be an open. Sounds like a membership thing like WPBA without the qualifiers but "open" tournament play. Open to those who come up with the entry fee. If somebody can come up with some way for Trudeau to make BIG BIG BUCKS on this then maybe I'd consider the possibility of "shady".JMHO

Watch my words and see if the promised events aren't invitationals.

According to the schedule on the IPT website they are all open events on their calendar except for one Invitational event, which will feature the "The top 40 IPT members who've earned the most most money in the IPT tournaments in 2006 will be invited to this tournament." Taking it at face value (Which is all anyone can do until we start to see it in action) politics does not seem to the major governing factor of this tour, money is. If you stump up the $899 to join and the $199 per tournament you are on equal status with everyone else. If and when this develops into a dominant Men's Pro tour we can worry about the politics of match scheduling, who gets inivited to tournaments, who gets places in the WPC, who gets called for being late to a match, who said what to whom etc.

Of course the other issue will be how the other Pro tours, notably the UPA and potentially the WPBA, react (As far as I can see there is no restriction for women to play in the IPT). If they ban their members from playing that could cause problems.

I just am amazed by all the people who see the glass as half empty instead of half full.

Being an Network Engineer (And a Dilbert fan) I always keep redundant second glass of water on standby ready for active failover should my primary glass fail to be full ;-)

But seriously, you are absolutely right for the most part, everyone should just relax and see how it goes. The key moment will come when real people start paying a real $899 membership fee, rather than just watching a one-off promotional match.

Kevin Trudeau is certainly a talented marketer and I certainly hope he can not only bring popularity but also credibility to the sport. His first venture makes several spurious claims that make those in the know shudder a little.

I haven't seen anyone else bring up his well publicized questionable past:
See: http://www.mlmsurvivor.com/ftc_trudeaulinks.htm

I don't know the inside story, so better not judge a book by its cover. However, I've seen many of his infomercials and believed they were misleading. Buyer beware I always say.

Just google Kevin Trudeau jail / fraud or similar terms and you'll find plenty of stories.

Fingers crossed though. I wish him well in creating some great pool entertainment.

We talked about this stuff while you were away, Colin. Btw, welcome back.

Kevin was in jail, but from what I've heard he was innocent of any objective crime.

We'll see.

I thought some of you sharp guys would have picked up on that :-) He did get quite a bit of bad press in Australia so I wondered if it was as well known in the US.

He does admit to doing a couple of unsavoury things in his youth on the website. Good to see he's up front about it.

With the trade commission violations, as a libertarian (buyer beware), frankly I don't think those issues are any of the fed's business.

Anyway, on balance, it's more positive than I first thought. But still, buyers beware!

I hope the IPT will work with the BCA, UPA, WPA, or other more international pool associations to create a truely international 8 ball tour. Hopefully there will be some international tour stops. In addition, I hope the IPT will promote this tour outside of the US, instead of having the tour comprised of 90%+ North American players, and calling the champion World Champ.

Call me crazy but I have tons of faith in Trudeau, he is a master at marketing. He has taken things others have pushed, polished it up and presented it his way and viola! the money rolls in, I believe he has the best selling book in the country right now about a topic pushed for years, but his version has made more money then all the others. I would guess Mike Sigel has a lot of say in this project and he has a pretty good winning record as well.

Bottom line these guys are winners, and they hate to lose, and this sport is ripe to take off, I just got back into the game myself after a few years of being away, Got an HDTV and watched the HD version of the Color of Money and The Hustler and bingo got the itch and I'm back, I had a friend call me out of the blue who saw a game on ESPN and wanted to play for some reason, he's back too, so I don't know maybe Trudeau is just a master at picking the right things at the right time.

I would also say if any game is going to bring the average person back to the sport, 8-ball is that game. 9 ball was the push years back, fast and flashy for TV, but the average person became way too frustrated with nine ball.

I say put the game in the spotlight with some big money promotion and regardless if the tour continues or just a one time thing, it will attract new blood and push the other tours to a higher level as well.

Honestly I think they need a quackwatch for quackwatch....That site almost looks like it's funded by the big drug companies. lots of things on that list are far from quackery. All I can say is, many things on that list are gaining in acceptance by doctors and are way better then the modern way of taking tons of drugs and surgery for things that can be handled with better diets, exercise, breathing properly, vitamins etc...

None of these things bother me at all about Trudeau, the only thing he might be guilty of of is taking others ideas and making a grundle on it:D It doesn't make him less rich or take his ability to promote away, he loves pool, and will do his best to make it huge, and in the same time promote something of his, who hasn't done that before. He's got the cash and the drive to get things done. He's the best thing to happen to the game in some time, and it's got people talking.

I mean what's the worst thing that could happen...:D
Reverse aging by playing pool
"It's all in the 8-ball"

Kevin Trudeau's mega pool memory
"scientific studies show playing pool increases memory by 15%"

Learn to read English and use English playing pool
"Anyone can learn to read playing pool, guaranteed."

Get rich playing pool the Kevin Trudeau way!
"5 easy steps to get rich, and have fun doing it"

The rules that were mentioned, as JAM speculated Only for tv purposes... I think it is the opposite. No shot clock, jump cues or breaking from the rail. The first two, I believe make the game interesting to the average player. Without the shot clock you could have minute and half to two minute decision making (slow games). Without a jump cue you would loose the exciting high jumps that Jannette and Ewa like to do. The slow cloth idea surprises me also because you will not see the balls flying all over the place which also would be more appealing to a laymen. I wouldn't doubt that these rules were suggested by Sigel because of his straight pool experience.

Agreed, the products mentioned do sound like "snake oil" to me. :p

There was an unnamed pool entrepreneur in my area who years ago opened up a pool room which eventually went under, and he filed for bankruptcy. Pool in his blood since a young child, he learned from his mistakes, poor business decisions, and today is the owner of the largest chain of billiard parlors on the East Coast and as well is the biggest distributor of tables.

I wouldn't care if it was Kevin Trudeau or Attila the Hun. If there is a tournament offering $200,000 to $300,000 as a first-place prize, I will be the first in line to pay the $899 membership fee for my horse. If anything, it would give him incentive to practice every single day and exert 100-percent of his efforts into bringing his best game to the table. For that kind of dough, I'd imagine every single pool player in the world wouldn't mind risking a dime. This kind of cash infusion is EXACTLY what will change the current stagnation of pool as I know it now.

In reality, the lot so-called "professional-caliber" players in the States, especially the men, are suffering. Only a select few of the current members of the "governing body of professional pool" are afforded opportunities for financial gain, and even then, the expenses far outweigh the benefits.

If this venture takes off, I am in like Flynn! Bring it on, I say! :)

After reading the information provided regarding the IPT, I think it will be tremendous if it is actually for the players and goes off. I am looking forward to seeing how it turns out.

I put my answer into the poll question: Who will win? Jones/Sigal

I couldnt believe that with (103841 Votes Total) Sigal is only a 53% favorite to win. Guess there is 50,000 people or so that think Jones has a chance.

Good news

I want to check in as one of those who feel positive about this news....For years I have been reading how pool needs sponsorship, financial backing, promotion, and basically someone who's willing to take a chance .... now it seems it is happening and despite all the naysayers, I see this as good news and I hope for its success....We just have to wait and see..... Good luck to Mr. Trudeau because his success in this venture will bode well for pool....

I agree 100%. What have we got to lose? I think that we will all agree that we need something new in the sport and the way that I see it, it is either this or "Ballbreakers". Believe me. I choose this.
