is $1.50 too much for a game of pool?

how much are you guys paying per game? we dont have a pool hall here, just bar boxes. if you dont use his tables, you cant be in his league. no one to give him any competition around here. i know i havent been playing as many warm up games and im sure others cut back a little since he raised it from $1.00. he must have felt the difference in his pockets but he has not budged. we also lost a couple of teams out of our league i think due to boycotting him, still no change.

1.50 seems like a lot. I think I may have seen a 1.25 here once, but if its a bar with boxes 90% of the time its a dollar.

If he rents the tables your boycotting should be felt. However, if he owns the tables they are likely paid for and he probably doesnt care.

he owns them, and i think you are right!

Well, I guess I'll stop *****in about playin at the one place in town that charges a dollar a game... my bar only charges a quarter (the reason I go there).

For serious players for sure that is a bit much, considering they can go through games in 2-5 minutes. A race to 7 could cost 20 dollars, which is silly if they get it done in less than an hour.

But I think it's probably worth it for bangers who take 10-15 minutes or more during a game. For them it should be a better deal than arcade machines which can be over in less than 2 minutes.

It took a long time to get me on the tables when they went from 50 to 75 much less 1.00 and more. Thing is, at least for me, i'll spend a roll of quarters on a 50 cent table, maybe eat something or at least have a beer or a coke or 2. But it only take me a couple minutes to run a table off a good break. So lets say I play 8 games an hour @ 1.50 and you got $12 an hour. even if I only play 4 games an hour its $6. So if I come into a bar with 1$ or more tables I shoot maybe 2 games and leave. No food, 1 coke, and I ask them why they can't level the table on my way OUT!

$1.50 is a little much for a game, but it is not unheard of. I think most places that I see(in MN also) charge $1.25 or $1.50 now. I know of places that charge $2 a game, but those are not pool halls.

For most people, a game of pool takes a little while, and $1.50 does not seem that much, when compared to other activities. It sucks for us, because we can get in 10+ games an hour.

When the price hits .75/GAME I don't patronize them places, as there are plenty of place to play for a Quarter, or Two Quarter a GAME.

Everyone should just quit. That is way to much. I would tell him to stick it and believe me he will be sorry in a short matter of time. The reason he get's away with things like this is because people will not quit. So who is the blame here? People that support him. JMHO

yeah that's too much. not enough people are boycotting him. i thnk they call it a conglomerate when someone controls the market like that

Yes BUT, having owned 2 poolrooms and 2 bars I have a little insight in that business and he may well be trying to keep his business afloat the only way he can. There are poolrooms and bars closing all over the country every day. On top of the terrible economy, poolrooms have had the smoking ordinances, the DUI laws, taxes and insurance costs going through the roof and the seasonal aspect of the business also makes it soooooo tough to make a go of it. I love pool players, it's in my blood, but frankly from my experience pool players in general usually spend very little money in a pool room or bar outside of their table time. Certainly not all of them are that way but probably in excess of 75% of them are. They try to keep their "nut" as low as possible! I can understand this and even relate to it when I was "on the road" but it sure makes it hard to run a profitable business. And lets face it, while most all pool room owners get in to the business because of their love of the game, they have to eat too and people get upset when the lights go out and the A/C goes off because you can't pay the electric bill. Customers see the pool room usually when it's at it's busiest and assume the owner is making money hand over fist. When in reality he's playing catch up all the time and robbing Peter to pay Paul. It's a real tough business and we need to realize that if we want a nice place to play on good equipment someone has to foot the bill for these things. Don't automatically assume the owner is gouging you. You'd probably go into shock if you had his obligations and expenses to deal with along with customers complaining about the rising cost of his services and products.
Just food for thought!

Maybe back in the 50's:thumbup:

I hardly see any places charging $1.00/game or less. We are all talking about coin-op bar tables right?

Sherm,

I understand your point of view. The situation in the OP's bar is different from nearly every place I'm aware of. The guy has a monopoly and is taking full advantage of it.

If I were in the OP's situation, I'd seriously consider buying my own table. Lots of used Valley's available for a reasonable amount of money. Perhaps invite other league players to his home and charge a reasonable minimum charge ($5) per night per person to play as much as they wish. King of the Hill might work nicely. Might not take long for the OP to recoupe his investment. Bet the bar owner would notice the lost business then!

In Vegas, most bars charge a quarter per game. Some fifty cents. The bars with Diamonds might even go as high as seventy five cents. A dollar per game with todays economy might lose the owner lots of business as his real profit center is in the video poker machines that line his bar. No pool players equals lost revenue!

I agree the owner is walking a thin line. I wonder if he upped the prices for the drinks over his bar? Most people I know who occupy a bar stool for longer than one drink don't care what the bartender charges them. The same guy who complains about $1.25 or $1.50 per game might not say a word about paying $3.50 per bottled beer. Bet if he walked into a grocery store and was asked to pay $21.00 per six pack we'd hear the same complaints! JMHO

Most of the Bars in the Valley of the Sun are $.50/GAME!, and a few are $.25/GAME! Arizona is a Low Paying Wage, Right to work State!

Could you change games to full rack banks? You'd get more play for your money.

Sorry guys, small error. Some bars in Vegas, such as Rum Runners and the LV Cue Club charge $1.00 per game on their Diamond tables. A per hour charge is also available. Mickey's Cues and Brews has an all day charge of $8.00 to rent a Diamond. Absolutely the best deal in Vegas for a small or large Diamond table.

Wow, that is an incredible deal for $8 a day. Might have to pack my stick next time I'm going to Vegas just to take a break from the Casino's. Open 24 hrs??? I answered my own question, saw there Myspace account and got the information I was looking for, 8 am to 4pm all day charge of $7 which is still a good deal, and it looks like a nice place. Still think I will pack the stick.

As for 1.50 a game. I would go with the suggestion of getting a group together and buying a used valley table/tables and set them up in someones garage just to continue having a place to play. You could even set up a league if you have three or four people that have tables at there houses and don't mind the weekly company.

Cost

1.50 for a bar box table is too much. As far as I am concerned, if any place goes over a $1 a game, I won't go to that place anymore.

Most places are .75 a game around here. One place I go to is $1 a game, but you get 8 games for a $5 dollar bill, and 20 for a $10 bill.

Some 9 ball only challenge tables are still .50 a game.
