Is ok that I use a cue without a tip to break?

About a year ago the tip on my break cue popped off. I can't put on tips myself so I tried to break with it without the tip. I break just as good with it now that it doesn't have a tip as I did when it did have a tip.

I was just wondering, does using a cue without a tip to break with damage my cueball in anyway?

This maybe a really stupid question but I was wondering anyway.

I would think it would be illegal equipment in most situations.

TXsouthpaw- Yep, just the ferrule

DJKeys- I should have added that I use this stick only at home when I'm practicing- I don't use the stick anywhere else or any other time.

You will most likely damage the ferrule before you damage your cueball. Why not just take it to your local repairman and let him get it back to normal for you? Or send it out to be repaired?

Don't do it. Go buy a Phenolic tip, or a hard leather tip and install it.

It is not difficult at all.

Get some sand paper and sand the top of the ferrule and the bottom of the new tip.
Go to homedepot, autozone and buy Loctite Super Glue Gel.

Put a dot of glue on the ferrule and spread it evenly. Put the tip on.
Now slowly hold the shaft upside down and rest the tip on a table and hold the shaft with a little pressure for 15-20 seconds.

Use a razor blade, Xacto knife, or a sharp knife and trim off the excess glue or tip. Use sand paper to round and scruff the tip.

Easy. Takes about 5 minutes.

Just wondering what kind of table you are playing on?
Is the cue a Cuetec?

Come on, if the guy asks about shooting pool without a tip on.

I don't know what to say. Speechless.

The table is a AMF Playmaster

As for the cue, you're half right- The shaft is a Cuetec and the butt is some generic cue. No, the two do not fit together but I made them fit. For that reason it would be pointless to take the cue to have a new tip put on.

Duce- I don't shoot with the stick... I just break with it when I practice 8-ball. I get good breaks with it, what's the problem?

I think the problem is that it just doesn't come under the heading of "cool". Other than that, at home, no problem... imo.

Exactly the answers I expected.
Not a cue to worry about and no big deal if you rip the felt either, I guess.:p
I guess you dont give 2 deuces about any cue ball control on your break.
:help:Dude get a grip spring $50 bucks and buy a break cue.
PM me if you need one.:ok:

Yes I do care about cue ball control, that was implied in my last message when I said I get good breaks with it- I am able to consistently park the cue ball in the center of the table.

I am kinda worried about ripping the cloth, though. But I have breaking with this set up for about a year and I have not ripped the cloth yet.

It is kinda funny though how you vaguely insulted me and then offered to sell me a break cue.

Another question: I know about the possibility of ripping the cloth breaking with a bare ferrule, that is a risk I'm willing to take but is it possible for the ferrule to hurt the slate in any way?

???????

STUPID QUESTION IS RIGHT---DIG THE TIP INTO YOUR CLOTH ONE TIME AND IT WILL RIP IT ALL TO HELL,NOT TO SMART!!!!

I must admit that some of the replies here have me suprised. I know in my original post I said that my question may be stupid but it was an honest question with out pretense, yet a few post here seem to have been posted in an effort to humiliate me (in which you have succeded!).

Its a tough world out here. Whats up with the 3 year membership and under 30 posts.

Don't worry about these wise guys :grin-square:, LCampbell. They're just having fun with you. Not a stupid question, but the advice is good though... if you keep breaking with it, eventually the ferrule will start to get beat up. Maybe not a big problem, but then it's a little sharper, more likely to be hazardous to the cloth, etc. Let's just put it this way, I wouldn't allow anyone break or shoot with a tip-less cue on my table. :shocked2:

Maybe this is a good chance to practice putting your own tips on. If it falls off, you're only back where you started. :D But if you wait too long, you'll have a chewed up ferrule that you won't be able to attach a tip to.

If you get good enough at installing the tip, you'll be able to do it on your playing cue too, when the time comes.

Worst case scenario, if this is too much of a pain, you can slap on a slip-on tip. They must sell those on the interweb somewhere. I wouldn't advise it over a regular tip, but I'd think it's better than just a plain ferrule. At least it's a temporary solution until you get it re-tipped properly.

Good luck. :)

If you don't see a problem why on earth did you ask for opinions?

He was probably just trying to understand specifically what the problem is.... eg, he assumes people use tips on their break cues for a reason, such as not to damage the cue ball, but wants to understand without having to learn the hard way. ;) That's my take on it anyway. :D

Illegal Cuetec Call Travis

It would be illegal to hit the cue with any part of the cue other then the tip.
As far as the original question of damage to the balls. Are they plastic, phenolic or aramith?
