Is the APA that bad?

Well guys thanks for all of the info..
I guess I will give it a go when I get back..at the very least it would help establish a network of fellow players....

Thanks again

S&P,

FWIW. Lot's of good posts in this thread. I've played in many different leagues, including APA, BCA, ACS, and locals. There can be drama in any one of them (and there usually is), but I'd say that it's never ruined the experience for me.

I like the match play format of the APA, but the better players in my area play ACS, BCA, or Valley. Good luck to you in finding the right fit.

APA isnt as bad as people make it sound. For me it's a fun night out and you get some competition.

But like others said. Look into BCA leagues also. APA is a little wierd with some of their rules. (ie no jump cues, no push)

I have played in BCA, APA and some bar leagues. There is sandbagging in all of them if that is what you want to call it. Many times after players lose they will say that they wanted to run up innings to keep at a lower level. Is this true or are they just sore losers. I have seen in the BCA players just putting in the amount of balls needed for their team to win to try to keep their ranking down. One player broke and didn't make a ball. I then ran down the table, played safe and then out. He said after that game that he didn't want to make anything because they already won that set and he didn't want the ball count. I guess that I was stupid to do that instead of sh!tting in the 8 and losing so I could keep my ranking down. We did get another point for total balls, and we got that by one ball.

I have found the best to do is play as good as you can and not worry about all the other crap that goes on because one match or game will not make that much difference in the overall scheme. What good does it do if you have to keep losing to keep you ranking down? What are you accomplishing? If you have to do this why play? There are always people trying to beat the system or so they think. No system or league is perfect. If you are looking for one you will never be on one because you will never find it.

This post sounds as if I could have written it myself. I agree 100%.

APA is one of the BEST league systems out there. Mostly for the lesser player.

But then you get all the sandbaggers. Once you get into being a seasoned player, a lot of the players (not all of them) know how to "work the system".
BCA IMO is the very BEST.

In a word

Yes, it is, because:

They use less rankings for handicap than Valley or BCA dioes.
Less rankings = less definition of skill level = more sandbagging.

1 ranking in APA 8 ball = 9.375 rankings in BCA 8 ball (5 man team).

If, by chance, you do like the APA, lobby for them to change their ranking
(handicap) system to a more definitive system.

You can have fun in the APA, but don't think you are 'pro' level if you reach a n 8 in 8 ball or 9 in 9 ball in it. If by chance you do, just play in the BCA advanced league to come back to reality.

APA has Masters, which isn't handicapped at all.

True, but not every league operator runs a Masters division. It's only recently that they started running Masters in my area, in fact.
