Is the last little bit of the tip the best part?

It's getting to be time to change my tip.. I like hard tips. I have a favorite and I'm not asking what tip you recommend.

just stating an observation

the last 16th of an inch of a tip
measuring the shiny black side part of the tip not the chalked rounded part.

really seems to play the best for me. and holds its shape far longer than earlier in it's life. my experience is ... tips are like dogs.. every one is different.. they require a lot of work when they are young but once you get one the way you like it.... you are sorry to see them go.

SVB said the same thing to me at JOB's this year, i looked at his shafr and th ecrown ot the tip came down to the ferrule

for me add 1mm of side wall thats my favorute

You may not like that old dog so much after your ferrule cracks from not having anything protecting it. I understand how you feel but a 16th of an inch is too thin. Change it, to whatever tip you like of course.

Another option is to put a carbon plate beneath it in the first place. Then you can play it down as thin as you want.

I always feel that the tip plays the best right after installation.
I like the tip to be thick, when I put a new tip I get it's hight to be around half of the diameter.

As stated, you're putting your ferrule at risk. $10 to $25 to change a tip. $30 to $45 to change ferrule with new tip. Your call.

For most, after a new tip install, there's a breaking in period. Usually when you hit five or six hundred balls, give or take, the tip starts to feel perfect. It stays that way for a good while as you get more and more used to it.

Once it gets compacted past the hardness you originally wanted, it's time to get it changed. In other words, if you play with a medium tip, it becomes hardened after a period of time, usually less than 4-6 months depending on how often you play, and your style of play. Hard tips get compacted too and are no longer just hard, but extra hard.

A new tip, after the break in period feels much better than a tip nearing it's end. We just hate the break in period and tend to adjust to the compacted tip gradually.

Yeah, I like how a tip feels after it mushrooms and I have to trim it up. From there on out it's smooth sailing.

Cuedog, beautiful white shepherd. I loved the pic. I lost my WGS not too long ago. She was one of my best friends. :(

i use moori med and dont like them when they are new. after about a month they get better for me. i re-shape as needed to keep a constant dime radius. for me also it seems to get better and better as it gets smaller but i never let it get too small.

Yep!

I agree, You know your tips Mully.

It seems when I'm out In a tourny or just shootin. I always notice the people who inspect & shape(only before practicing for me if needed) the tips on their cues before play. Tells a bit about the attitude of the player. Seems that way.

Sorry for your loss 3and stop. Although this one isn't mine, it's the closest to the one I lost that I could find in a pool related pic.

Read them all and agree with most. The others have their opinion just as I have mine.

After replacing hundreds of ferrules and thousands of tips, not to mention I don't play too bad either, I just assumed I was allowed an opinion. After all...it IS my profession.

Whenever i'm around pro players or I get to watch them on a video I always pay close attention to their tips if I get a chance and I've found that most of the pros i've seen like their tips cut way down close to the ferrule. You don't see many using a tall tip. I definately think they hit better, especially the solid tips like triangles and elkmasters when they are worn or cut down close to the ferrule.
