Looking at people playing in poolrooms and bars over the last ten years or so, I believe there are a lot more people playing at C level or better than there are D and below (banger) than there were years ago. I believe the Internet has a lot to do with it. Years ago it was very hard to find good info on raising your game up until the 1990's. Today it's all over the Internet, and a lot buy pros.

Pool was a happening fad in the mid to late 90's, I think we are seeing the after effect of that. Mixed Martial Arts and Texas Hold Em seems to be the fad of today. Anytime something gets trendy it promotes growth. For a while pool was cool to everyone. When people seen money opportunities presenting themselves they made adjustments that attracted and allowed the whole family to play pool so people started learning at younger ages and more people had tables at home.

We both had easy pickings with over 95% of the players we encountered years ago betting small. Now 20 to 30% of the people betting small aren't a walkover any more. It used to be that these people understood trying to make a ball and get shape on the next ball, rarely more than that. Now a player is likely to understand patterns and safety play and it seems like half the bangers in the bar can make advanced shots that would instantly label you a shark thirty years ago. Things have changed. I think it is for the better.

The proliferation of knowledge in pool and Billiards is tremendous due to the internet (youtube), books, dvds, etc - I think a lot of credit goes to Robert Byrne when he published his book Byrnes' Standard Pool and Billiards
in the 70's and that got the ball rolling in the USA. I don't know what was available in Europe at that time but I bet there was a lot more than was in this country.
