I would say the problems are the same, however, the solutions to the problems are different. The business model for pool revolves around the entrants as pool is a participant sport rather than a viewed sport.

A boxing match, say, is financed via viewers for example.

A pool tournament is financed mostly by entrants fees and "bums on beds" (leastways here in the UK) and inbound sponsorship comes usually from outside the pool industry rather than from within.

Difference? Yes and no.
Ultimately all promoters are trying to accomplish the same goal. And that is to sell the product.(immediately, or some time in the future) They are salesmen. However, unlike other types of products, this type of sales is heavily dependent on marketing, and successful marketing requires understanding the consumer, which in this case, would be pool and billiard fans.

So, the presumed prerequisites would be an understanding of the games and the fans, an understanding of salesmanship 101, and hopefully some excellent organizational skills.

Although it is similar to other sports in many ways, promoting pool is slightly different right now. Many events are "New" to the market and require building a consumer base from scratch, as opposed to events that always happen on the same day and time. (ie superbowl etc) Likewise, many events have only a regional or local appeal, or a specific intended audience based on which game(s) is being played, as opposed to other sports where there is basically only one version of it.
