Is there a reason micarta ferrules are sought after?

Absolutely love this cue.

I'm fairly new to upper end cues, and pool in general really.

One thing I've been wondering a bit about also is why micarta ferrules are seemingly so sought after.

Why is that?

Search

"Old yellow Westinghouse Micarta"

then Google

"Law of Supply and Demand"

All will be revealed...

Just one of the many mysteries and myths that pervade our sport....IF YOU CAN'T GET IT........it must be better.

Actually, The fact that it IS better, is what makes it better(in the minds
of many) the fact that it is RARE is what makes it expensive. See
Law of Supply and Demand above.

Pay 800-1k for a nice Schon R6 with micarta ferruled shafts and hit with it for a few hours. Ask yourself that same question and I bet you have an answer.

I going to assume your talking about the old Westinghouse stuff with asbestos in it.

1. Expensive

2. Hard to get

3. cool looking IMO

4. Plays good and stays clean

I actually like the Mason H stuff myself . Nice light yellow color. No Asbestos

Only a small fraction of the Westinghouse Micarta had any asbestos.

According to people who worked there, only the military could buy the
version made with asbestos. IIUC - the stuff Schon, and other cuemakers
used, contains no asbestos.

Okay this seems like a touchy subject around here so I'm going to leave it for what it is.

Thank you to those who had actually helpful posts on the matter.

I'm not a fan of micarta. It hits good, but I can't stand that yellow look. The paper based stuff is OK, but the stuff that people go nuts over doesn't appeal to me. To each his own tho.
