is there a standardization of shaft joint diameter out there?

hi all,

am a long time player and fan, but know very little about equipment.

so this may sound very amatuer, here it goes:

is there a standardization of shaft joint diameter out there?
in other words, do shafts match other maker's joints diameter (not pins)?

i understand that cuemakers use different pins, but do shafts all share the joint diameter?
ie. a joss shaft fitted into a mcdormett butt, provided that they share the same pins?

have been using the search function, and i get this impression because predator and OB-1, because they sell shafts that can be fitted with all sorts of pins, and fit into custom and wholesale cues.

does the same apply to custom cuemakers????
say, a CC shaft with a uni-loc pin fitted into a Olney butt with uni-loc pin?
or
a DZ cue shaft on someone else's butt, provided they share the same pin?

thanks!!

The manufacturers do tend to build joints to similar sizes. You can go to our website and see what the most common sizes are.

http://www.obcues.com/shafts.html

If you notice, they aren't all the same size, but all of the same joint style is usually the same size. For example, most 5/16-14's are .840", and most Uni-Loc joints are .842". Keep in mind that this reflects the production side mostly. Some custom cuemakers build to these sizes, and some don't.

I hope that helps.

My Experience

I have bought Predator and OB1 shafts that have matched well on my Gina, Joss and Rauenzahn. I bought 2 Predator shafts for my McWorter and Jerry's butt diameter is smaller than the Predator shafts so there was a lip which even though it didn't effect play drove me nuts. I saw Jerry McWorter at SBE and talked to him about it. He told me to send him the shafts and he turned them down and matched the joint rings to perfectly match the cue for a nominal price. Jerry was great to deal with. So I guess not all Custom cue butt diameters are the same.

The short answer is no. Most of them are similar, but you will find variations. Like Royce said, the most common is around .840" but they can be all over the map within a certain range (obviously they can't be really big or really small). I have had a few Rick Howard cues and he uses a smaller diameter around .830-.835. It can be hard to match up his shafts with other butts and not have a lip.

I was given a Pechauer Pro series cue with a Pechauer JP series shaft . Other then the ring work being differant so was the diameter of the shaft collar. The JP series shaft collar was larger then the Pro series steel joint.
I had Chris Byrnes of CB custom cues change the shaft rings to match the butt. It just bothered me that it didnt match.
So there is an example of the same cue company using differant sizes on the cues they make themselves, just a differant series.

I am not entirely surprised about this, in terms of the predators/ob-1 cases.
I thought people would be opportunistic in saving a bit money to not buy a shaft (and the cuemaker's effort to make another shaft) when people already have one.

plus, i would imagine that that would save a lot of hassle in finding space/getting a new case..

This is particularly surprising for me. I (maybe naively) would think that there is a standard within a company

Yes, the "Pro" joint is different than the JP series in diameter. Also, the depth of the quick release unthreaded portion is different too. They really are 2 different joints.

I did not know that. The only thing I noticed was that the Pro series is piloted and the JP series is flat faced. My shaft screws on just fine and the cue is straight. And considering that I got it free, in great condition and only have $60 tied up in it (I don't consider tip changes)and it has an ivory ferule .I'm happy.
Plays real good also.
Doug thinks it has a "Vague" hit but what does Doug know.
