Is this a Brunswick Viscount?

Hello,

I purchased this pool table today, it was marketed as a Brunswick Viscount and I'm pretty sure that is what it is. I did however notice a few differences from the Viscounts I have seen online and this particular table. As far as I have seen, Viscounts have a plastic apron, mine was painted over its original finish, upon stripping it this evening, I discovered it was wood (see last photo). This table has pockets as opposed to a gully system I have seen on Viscounts online. It does have the legs that are common to all viscounts I have seen and so I do think it is some sort of Viscount variation.... any ideas??? Are there any other photos I could provide that would help determine model?

Thanks in advance.

It looks like you bought a snooker table. Is that what you wanted? If you wanted a pool table, the rails are not correct for pool.

Thanks, the truth is I didn't know it was a snooker table... I'm not an avid pool player as can be deduced by my purchase. I'm not opposed to snooker as I've heard it is a more challenging game. The previous owner had both snooker and pool balls... I assume it can serve as both for a recreational player?

It can be a little intimidating for the recreational player. My personal table for years was a 5x10 Snooker table but I love snooker and their size ball sets to play everything will sharpen you up. Your stroke, cue speeds, and overall style will probably change. Hopefully you will enjoy the table but if you are any unsure I would recommend selling or trading asap. Those tables are NOT for everyone and depending on how much you have invested, you may have trouble finding a buyer.

Straw is bang on. The angle of the pockets will make it very challenging to make balls. That may be something you love or hate. Interested in hearing what you think after playing a couple games on it.

Far as I know, Viscounts aprons were issued in plastic. I have played on one whose aprons were custom made from walnut to replace the original plastic. BTW, it appears the slate corners are cut for snooker rails/bends. Making this a drop pocket pool table would likely require a considerable re-do.

What's the story on the Viscount? Good table? Bad? Highlly collectible? etc. Reason I ask is a friend of mine's father-in-law has an 8-foot model in his gameroom.

Thanks for your comments and advice, I have decided to keep the table and try my hand at snooker, sounds like it may be a lot of fun as well as improve my game. I'll let you know my thoughts once assembled.

Table

They are not gold crown rails....Just because they have the same cushion and slate dimensions don't mean they are the same. Brunswick put superspeed cushions on many of their tables...that don't make them " just like the GoldCrown"

I've worked on several viscount tables... They are far from a GC, most ppl get the wrong impression about the table... Don't know who is going around telling the viscount is "just like the GC"
they are pulling your leg.
The viscount is a home table NOT a commercial use table.

Not dogging the table, it may play decent when set up well for a home setting....
A GOLDCROWN IS A GOLDCROWN.

A friend bought a roomful of Viscounts in the 70s....6x12s.
He was sorry.....the tables played a full length slower than a Gold Crown...
....I thought it was a rubber problem or cheap wood in the rails....
...I now think it was mostly the lighter weight of the table.

If I had to buy a table blind, I would take the heaviest one.

Whaddiya think?

pt...appreciates you and RKC sharing your knowledge

This is the one that I have. Going to restore it next month.

I never did post an update for this table, so here it goes. I had never disassembled and then reassembled a table before, I made sure to take photos of all table components and label them for correct position during reassembly. All hardware was also placed in bags with labels. At some point during its life, the table rec'd a paint job which involved a textured paint application to the aprons and a salmon color paint to base as seen in my original post. I decided to strip this down to bare wood, sand and apply stain.

It was a fun project and overall I'm happy with the outcome, the table plays beautifully and my game has improved substantially!
