Is this a good deal

It could be, I have heard of antique tables going for as little as 500$, for 4,000 I'd expect it to be in very good condition.

I sold one for about the same money.

Hal, if you owned an antique table like this can you comment on how they actually play? I've seen people saying that, whilst they can be restored to look great and obviously have a historical value, they do not play as well as modern tables because the rails are bolted horizontally into the side of the frame instead of vertically down as has been done since the 1950's.

Yes, mine was bolted horizontally also. I had new rails, pockets, and cloth put on it. It played decent, but I always got a "hollow" sound or feeling when the balls were rolling. The slate was 1" thick with 1" wood underneath the slate. In my opinion, for $4,000, I say buy a Gold Crown. It's up to you though. If you want the antique, then go for it. This is not the actual table I had, but it's exactly the same. Mine was in much much better shape.
