Is this a sign of my poor break or poor racking skills...

or both?

I've been practicing my 8ball break lately (I'm a beginner) working on controlling the CB and I've been getting a nice spread and pocketing a ball about 50% of the time. The thing is I've been using the magic rack. I decided to go to the regular triangle because I plan to start going to pool halls as soon as I get out for summer. I was so shocked and dissapointed with the dropoff! I've never had a powerful break but this is just pathetic. Very poor spread and a big cluster left around the headspot.

So does it sound like bad racking or bad breaking? As soon as I go back to the magic rack everything goes back to normal.

Thanks in advance for any input.

Possibly both, but based on what you said, it seems to be more a racking problem. If you are able to spread the balls using a magic rack (perfectly tight every time), and not using a triangle, I would suggest inspecting your rack when using a triangle and you will probably see gaps between balls.

It sounds like a racking problem to me but you can also try taking some power off your break. This works pretty good to spread the balls if you can't get a tight rack.

Best of Luck

Brian :)

Therez definitely some small gaps here and there, but I was under the impression those were unavoidable unless you're using the magic rack?? I always strive to have the first ball frozen to the 2 behind it. Except I have to put it slightly in front or behind the spot.

Does the quality of the rack affect the tightness? I don't remember which one I have but I paid like $10 for it a while back. Its a black one made of thick, hard plastic

Thx for the replies!.

It could be the cloth or triangle too...

Balls rack a lot better with fresh cloth. The Magic Rack eliminates this problem because the balls are sitting up.

Also, check your triangle the make sure there are no gaps when pressing up the head ball and the next couple of rows. If there are gaps, try a stip of masking tape on the inside of each side to tighten up the rack.

The first three balls being frozen isn't as important as all the balls around the 8 being frozen to the 8. Any of the balls that touch the 8 ball should be frozen to the 8 ball, because with the 8 ball being in the middle of the rack it makes it the key ball in the efficient transfer of energy throughout the entire rack.

if you have a plastic rack its harder to get a tight rack to me i might just suck at racking but as much as i do it i should be the world champ if there was 1 lol
