i bought 2 pieces of very highly figured kingwood from a rep wood dealer, i cut and sanded the first piece about month or so ago. i made the last pass on the other piece 2 days ago, sanded it to size and put on a sealer. after i got out of the shop i came in and took a nice HOT shower.
last night about 2 am i woke up arms, eyes, neck, nose etc etc on fire, that damn poison wood set me ablaze. i don't understand because the first piece did not itch at all, both pieces looked the same.
my doctor told me NOT to take a HOT shower, because hot water opens the pores and makes it worse
i got the dish washing soap. rubbed it on all itching places and took a coolish shower.
my eyes are almost closed, both arms and legs itching like the worst poison ivy you have ever seen.
i have had this problem with cocobola, but never kingwood, but i guess now it seems to be any mexican rosewood.

I've been getting more sensitive to cocobolo but never had any reaction to kingwood. I just cored a kingwood front last week and all was well. Hope you get better soon.

If you have not already and it is that bad I suggest that you may want ask your doctor for some Anti-histamine. The best lotion I have found is Ivarest. http://www.ivarest.com/?gclid=CJ7X6JPTusYCFQqQaQode70AYw It does sooth the iching. You may also want to invest in Haz-mat suit and full face respirator, dust collection system, and an air purifier. They say that coco is a sensitizer, it makes us more sensitive to all sorts if things.

I can't work with any rose woods species. I now have Urticaria, the only antihistamines that control my condition are sedating ones. If I get a swollen tongue and difficulty breathing, then I need to get adrenaline . Low dose of prednisone and non drowsy antihistamines help with the day to day situations. But now I can flare up with no known cause, but mushrooms or chilly in food make me react within minutes of having food with small amounts of them in the food like a soup as an example.
So for me, I just do not do any work that exposes me to any dust from rose woods.

Taking an antihistamine like Benadryl along with a good antihistamine lotion will help ease the reactions quicker, but will make you drowsy. Your Doctor is very correct about the cold water showers/washings, the same goes for when working with fiberglass insulation.
I usually take Allegra and a nasal spray called Flonase everyday due to all my other allergies and have found that my reactions to coco and BRW seemed to be a lot less, but I still don't use them. I have 2 sneaky blanks left that once they get finished, that will be the last I use.
Hope you recover quickly.

I've never had poison ivy nor poison oak nor any such allergies. I used to be able to sleep in Cocobolo dust with no adverse reactions, however, the last 8 years or so I've started to react. Right now if I get near coco I'm itching for at least a week.
