It it uptight to be worried about teams buying each other drinks in league?

That's twice that you've failed to read the part about it where he's worried about the player being drunk. When you respond to things that you've read in entirety, you won't have so many problems discussing those things.

Just because I get the feeling I'd have to explain yet again for you if I don't do so now..

Playing weekly league and drinking.. no problem. Drinking and playing playoffs for league.. no problem. Getting drunk when your league teammates are relying on you to at least put forth a decent effort for your match.. may be a problem.

Try reading that 5 or 6 times to let it set in. See, I can have plenty of fun during league. Having to repeatedly explain stuff to "sober" people on a forum.. pretty lame.

Reminds me of a couple of friends that thought it was no big deal that they f* off sending the paperwork in time, costing the team a chance for playoffs. I work all day, get home so I can grab my stuff and head off to league. I don't do that so somebody can shirk their agreed-upon responsibility and make the team feel like they've wasted their time. I can go drink and play about any night I want(just like last night). When I accept the responsibility of being on a team and hand over my cash, I expect people to have at least a modicum of respect about it. If I want to play and get drunk, I don't have to piss away extra cash and drive all over, I can do that at my regular spot.

Once again, you make no sense. you're the one who misread my post and responded like an infant. Now you're saying I don't comprehend???
For the life of me I cannot figure out how you got from having a drink to not sending in paperwork and being irresponsible??? Where did I say don't put in any effort???
Maybe a little Adderall(sp) to help with your concentration

I read it just fine. You said he could do what he wanted and that if I'm not there to socialize then it's my problem. I responded with the fact that there are still responsibilities. My concentration is just fine. How's your memory?

Read post above and you will see nowhere in my post did I say what you're saying I said

So you're saying u sit at work all week and u set one night a week aside to relax(I'm assuming) playing pool and you're this uptight about somebody having a drink or 2 while playing - You must be a blast to be around<---Sarcasm

This is my other post - think you're the one who's confused

Maybe you clicked on the wrong post initially?

Since I suspect I know the league in question and the atmosphere in that place, I'll chime in here:

Was the offer made before the drinks were ordered? If someone's ordering a round and asks your guy whether he wants in, it seems nothing more than completely friendly. If your guy says yes more times than he should and it affects his play, it's really only his own fault. If someone orders one for him and sets it down in front of him, there's a lot more pressure. In that case there was an assumption that he would join in, and he has to opt out instead of having to opt in. If he says yes more times than he should in that case, it's still party his fault, but it could also be looked at as poor form on their part for pressuring him into it.

Obviously it also depends on their phrasing offering the drinks. Did they pressure him or did they just politely offer?

Sounds like I was maybe being too uptight.
We did actually advise him to stop after the 2nd shot, and save the third one for after the match.
And that's what he did.

I guess offering the drink is fine, since it's 100% his choice to take it or not,
I was just thinking there are cases where once the drink is offered,
it kind of puts pressure on someone to accept it,
and it would be better to just not put them on the spot like that.

Not offering also makes sure there's no "asterisk" on the scoresheet,
and nobody can start making accusations.
Like, I personally think it was 100% innocent, but some of my teammates might be more cynical.

Anyway, thanks for the reality check everyone.

It's so weird - it's like you were at MY league playoffs over the weekend!

We beat Team C and then we were in the finals. Most of my team was drinking throughout the day anyway. But one of the players on Team C bought my team a round of drinks during the finals. TWICE. Two of my teammates had to slow down their drinking and one player we had to sit out because he was too drunk.

Obviously, this only shows that we all drink too much, not that the Team C player was trying to get us drunk, though. ;)

I don't think you were uptight at all - you wanted to win and wanted the best out of your teammates.

Man ... I would NEVER want to play on your team ... Way way WAY too serious for me. I thought pool was supposed to be fun. I'd say you way over reacted, but that's just my opinion. I'd say the fact that you don't drink had a lot to do with this situation as well.

On the other side of the situation .... If the other team did that not out of friendship, but with the ulterior motive of getting someone drunk so their play suffered .... That is just pitiful.

If that's the way some people play pool .... I'm glad I just play with friends for a handshake or a beer.

Andrew: they bought the shots and said "hey so-and-so! Shot! Come get it!"
They weren't pressuring him really, but yeah, it does kinda put that 'social pressure' on him.
These things cost like 8 bucks I think. I can see how someone might feel bad rejecting the offer.

Trigger: thanks, that's pretty much the best way to sum it up. I just wanted him to play his best.
We all played pretty hard and didn't want to lose after four tough matches.
If he lost, we were done for the season. So I just wanted to make sure he was at 100%.

Rev: I dunno what you mean by "way overreacted". My reaction was this:
I took him aside and said "hey man be careful with the shots, I figure after 2 you're good 'n' loose
but 3 might throw you off a little... maybe save that third one til after."

He agreed and finished the set and that was it. Whole thing took 10 seconds.
He didn't seem offended.

You're right Creedo ... Over reacted was too strong of a description.

Sorry about that. I guess some of you guys are just way more into serious pool than I am. I just play for fun. Winning is secondary to comraderie and socializing. To each their own !

Not sure if you failed to read the post or just didn't care, but if somebody on my team looked like they were getting drunk(not just "drinking") before matches in playoffs or above, they'll probably be sitting that one out. I'm all for playing pool and drinking, but I'm not blowing off something right at the end after people have put their time and money into it. My team and a friend's are usually the first to get down to shots right after a match. If I'm putting back shots before a match, it usually means I don't care and I know that my game isn't as good with the whiskey. I had no problem joking with people and everything during Vegas, but I wasn't about to get drunk for my matches. Protip: everyone also hates the guy that makes it look like they wasted their time for 3 months.

Hint: you aren't deputy dawg and the drunk police sparky.

If you are so intensely into league that you are worried about your teammates blood alcohol content, maybe you should take a step back and realize wtf you are so concerned about. Pool league, like softball, darts, and every other rec league, is a chance for people to get out of the house, relax, and have fun, it isn't cut throat competition, it isn't playing for anything worth a damn, and it sure as hell isn't anything important enough for you to be the booze police for the team.

If that is you, then maybe you should take a break.

Again, everyone hates people like that. If it applies to you, then guess what? YOU are "that guy" everyone hates. You can make excuses all you want about your severely important league credentials, but guess what? At the end of the day people go there to relax and make friends, and I would bet you are the guy who wonders why no onetalks to you.

League pool is not your job. It does not put food on your table. You are not a professional. Get over yourself.

You don't know me and you don't know jack. I don't think that'll change any time soon. Keep being mediocre, bub.

Green for you:thumbup:

Are you guys cousins or did you fail the same school? I have no problem with drinking while playing, but I do have a problem with people getting drunk when others are relying on them to do something.

I really don't know how else I can repeat that without having to spell it out for a 2 year old.

Maybe you guys are just tools and want to troll. Who knows.

Whatever helps you sleep at night.

Your pissy posts in this thread speak volumes about what sort of person you are.

Mediocre is funny too, because from first hand observations the armchair warriors who get so butthurt over meaningless league matches are always people who wouldn't bet a quarter the sky is blue. I hope your league matches give you fulfillment.

It was playoffs. But, I didn't expect you to get that after having it pointed out a few times. My posts are pissy because I tire of dealing with people who act like dumbasses and don't read what they respond to. Call me armchair warrior or whatever you want. I've been playing for just over 8 years and have done pretty well on my own. Where have you gotten in 8 years? I'd guess nowhere, just like most others that act like they're hot stuff.

Look here's another post where you spell out exactly what sort of person you are. You can't even have a civil discussion about uptight league players without personal attacks.

Again, congrats.....you are "that guy."

Eight whole years! Well damn, how can anyone even open their mouths in the presence of a Professional.
