You know who you are.
You run to the nearby fast-food joint because the food in the room is too expensive.
You sneak in beer or whatever because you won't spend a nickel in the place.
You bang a few balls around with friends from table to table so the house can't really track where you are, or if you're "on time" or not. So you think you're slick because playing for free.
You may play in a local weekly tournament, but you annoy everyone by rushing to find an empty table in-between matches to squeeze in as much pool as you can.
You come to an event late, then lie to owner and state you were in the event and got knocked out so you can play on the empty tournament tables for free.

To add insult to injury, you're usually the FIRST ones to complain when everything in the room is not top-notch.
You want the very best equipment etc. but you won't help the room by spending a dime.

Well, where the $%#! do you think that money is coming from?

If you ever dare to enter a tournament that cost more that $20, you whine and gripe about payouts, green fees, etc.

The worst kind of cheapskates, in my opinion, are the railbirds who are there for hours and hours and will only buy one cup of coffee, but will poison every event by complaining to the players about event payouts etc. when they have NO stake in anything. They paid no entry fees, bought no one in the calcuttas, is backing no one and helped no one...they are just toxic a$$holes who have nothing better to do.

And please don't reply to this by telling me how some pro somewhere has no choice because they are struggling and it's a tough beat for them to make it.

Don't let this thread meander into the usual back-and-forth about "money in pool".

They are NOT who I am talking about.

... and they don't like paying for water.... lol

Seriously this is the circle of death blame game... cause what the cheapskate will point out is the room owner that leaves the AC off and lets the place get 85 degrees with 90% humidity in the summer, then makes you play in a parka in winter, charges 12.00 for a microwavable, barely edible cheeseburger, when the chalks get worn he puts them in a vice and cuts them down to 1/2 cubes, says the vacuum is broken as you write your straight pool score in the dust on the rail, and so on...

Yeah its a vicious cycle that will never end..

Great post...

Rail Birds

There should be a charge for breathing. Hey they also probably walked or got a ride so the parking lot looks empty. Such is life in a pool room.

Due to some recent financial "challenges" in my world, I'm kind of a bit of a cheapskate. And even so, I can't see myself falling into that description.

I buy my drinks where I play, and usually order food. I don't sweat table time, cuz where I play, it's .25 a game. (I usually contribute MANY quarters, though, hee hee) Admittedly, I won't go to the place where table time is $12 an hour very often....

I want my room to be successful.

I feel guilty when I don't order a TAR match, especially this last one, or the replay. VERY guilty....

I get it, OP.

i know what you are saying dub and i can relate to it.

when the housing boom went bust i lost everything, my bussiness, my house, even my wife. today i make less in a week than i used to in a couple of hours.

pool has been my saviour. when i go shoot and have a few drinks i can forget about all of lifes little problems for a while, the major ones are always on my mind:frown:

i am no cheapskate though. i play on 5 teams and my girlfriend plays on 3 of them with me. together we spend about 125.00 a week . half the time we eat before we go to league but sometimes we eat at the pool hall.

to some the 125.00 a week i average playing pool may not seem like a lot , but where i am at now in life that is a good chunk of change to spend in todays economy.

sometimes i think i should not play as often as i do but i love playing pool and cant seem to say no when someone asks me to join their team. everybody wants this badass s/l 5 with a 77% win record on their team :grin-square:

Couldn't reply until I stopped laughing.

I just keep biting my tongue

I do know some people are down and out because of health reasons, loss of job, house etc.

We all know of these people who have had genuine misfortune.

I am talking about the misers who refuse to spend just because they are cheap, regardless of their financial situation.

Yeah, room owners do try to cut corners as well, and yes, some do over-charge for food and skimp on A/C and heat, but STILL....buy a soda at least?

I know of a pool room in MD (Bank Shots in Laurel) that had FREE pool (yes, you read that right) every Sunday.

They recently had to change it to charge people $10 for the WHOLE DAY (still a massive bargain) because some of these losers refused to even buy a bottle of water.

It's like sneaking snacks into the movie theater because the concession stand prices are too high. Well, once again, you want the nice movie theater with all the trimmings right? Well, how do you think they make their money?

Same old story, not unique to pool I know, and I don't expect to change the world, but I should be able to say something about it.

I am going to start calling these people out in the room. As soon as they start to complain I will simply say, you don't spend a dime in here, so keep your mouth shut.

If they decide to no longer visit the room, then the owner has lost nothing because they spent nothing.

I think some people are just so dense that they just do not understand that the room owner has to pay American $$ to make pool rooms available to them for their pleasure and that they need the customer to spend a few bucks once in awhile to keep the doors open. The bar where we play leagues I bought a free cup of water last week for $3.00 because I was thirsty and didnt want beer or soda, I know the water was free but I understand that the bar owner spends money on floor space, tables, electric, etc, and he needs me to spend a little money so he can continue to provide his services for me. Why is it the people who spend the least complain the most?????

Typical pool room thinking: everybody's always worried about what's in everybody else's pockets, and what they're gonna do with it.

newest fad I've seen since they quite smoking in san antonio in bars and pool rooms is for people to come to the pool hall; order a glass of water, extra ice of course; don't want to pay a dime for it and then go outside to smoke and just happen to stop by their car and do some drinking and then back into the pool hall for another water. sickening I tell you.

Agreed! I always made sure to buy something while I was at the pool hall. When I was low on cash it might have just been one soda or one beer but I know table time alone doesn't keep pool halls open. And I'd always be sure to throw a couple $ in the tip jar at the end of the night. For all the good conversation and company and free advice I figured it was more than worth it.
