Ivory Billiard Balls

I need an approximate value for a friend. Set of Ivory billiard balls. Still in original case. Case is almost like new condition. Still has instruction sheet in box also. Can't find any date on it. Balls in used but very good condition.

I know it doesn't affect the price, as there is no proof. But these balls were owned by Willie Hoppe. He then gave them to Harold Worst, who then gave them to the guy that just gave them to the local carom club.

They want to raffle them off at the upcoming tournament, but need an approximate value to raffle them. If not enough tickets sold, raffle is over.

A very good way to check this out is see what ivory carom balls have been recently selling for on Ebay. My recollection is that $750 for an excellent condition set in the original wooden box with instructions is about right as of a couple of years ago--but you should verify this by checking on the site yourself. And that price (or whatever price you find) is for a set does not have the celebrity history of the set you have.

My friend Neil is correct. Bob Remus a long time cue maker and 3c player donated these to our club.

You can see pictures of the balls at:

www.caromclub.wetpaint.com Scroll down to Harold Worst Ivory Balls in left grey box area.

They will be on display during the tournament and Bob can share some stories about some of the good ole days about Harold Worst and Chinnick'

Back when I was following "ivory balls in Brunswick boxes" the usual price for a set in somewhat cracked condition was about $300. If the ownership could somehow be documented, it would greatly increase the value. Even just a letter from the oldest living owner might be worth something.

Sorry, can't help you with the valuation. Just have to say that I love the crisp click of ivory balls! The sound difference is the first thing I noticed about them, and the phenolics are dull by comparison. It's nice to have balls that have uniform density and stay round, though (I'm sure the elephants agree :))
