Ivory Butt Cap

I love ivory! I am getting a cue made with a 1in ivory joint and 1in ivory butt cap. I am really careful with my cues but since this is my first ivory inlaid cue I want to know any tips with preventing ivory butt cap from cracking in my cues lifetime!!

Thanks,

Patrick

Don't drop or smack the bumper of the cue on the floor as I see alot of people do. The bumper expand and cracks the Ivory buttcap or the buttcap itself hits the floor and chips. Also avoid large temperature swings as this will make the ivory crack.

Ivory is funny as sometime you can keep a cue forever with ivory ferrules, joint and buttcap and never have a problem or you can look at it and it will crack. I have not found a cue maker that will warrenty ivory.

As long as the cuemaker is using truly seasoned ivory, doesn't heat it up when working with it and you don't subject it to rapid temperature changes, you've done all you can do. After that it is chance. I put my ivory butt caps over at least a 1" sleeve and occasionally a 1.1" sleeve of aegis phenolic

Do not go with a bumperless style with the ivory butt cap and avoid any unwanted contact with foreign objects.

Thanks!!

I appreciate all the responses. I will take those tips with caution. I might just ask the cuemaker to core with phenolic and see what he can do.

Thanks!
