Ivory For Sale

Hi All,

I told a cuemaker friend that I would put his ivory up on the board. He has 23.3 pounds (I believe in one tusk). There are no cracks, and the hollow is not too deep. There are no black streaks in the bark. He's asking $3,000 + shipping. Please PM me if you have any interest and I'll put you in touch with him.

Thanks!

Steve

The going rate is about $110 per pound for the good stuff. He might not get $3k from a cue maker.

Last time I bought it, some was from David Warther and I also got some on ebay. You can pick up raw tusks on ebay for less than that some times, just have to keep watching for it.

Another thing is estate sales in your local area. It's not hard to find tusks, just hard to find good ones.

David Warther does NOT sell Ivory tusk any more. In fact I have not been able to find a whole tusk for some time - maybe two years. I do not shop Ebay for Ivory because the Elephant lovers drive up the price to shaft those who purchase pre-ban ivory or any ivory for that matter.

The last time I was able to find partial tusk the price was well over $110.00 per pound plus shipping.

If someone can point me in the right direction for $110 per pound ivory please do so.

Those managing estate sales around here are not stupid. They can get all the information they need from Google.

Well, it has been a while since I bought pieces from him. Lately, just bought ferrules and joints from him. He has gotten proud of it lately.

Maybe I spoke too soon. I have not bought any in a while. Maybe it is harder to get.

Seems like back a couple years ago, there was another guy selling ivory chunks and such... can't remember his name or contact information, but he had Mammoth, Elephant, Walrus and all that... is he still in business? He had a web site, but I can't remember the address.

The last price I got from my supplier was $200 per pound. It must be a very long time since you bought Ivory in the raw form,( not ferrules or other made parts). I bought a 10 inch piece of solid tusk from Walther, 2 years ago & the price was $145 per pound...JER

Ith hard thoo thalk wiff thiff phoot in mah mouff....

I bought it for $110 a pound when I bought it. It was a 9 pound tusk. I still have a little chunk of it. 9 pounds lasts a while. I don't know when it was.

I guess I have to apologize to the gallery since it's apparently not the accurate price any more. Sorry fellas.

Looks like my friend's ivory isn't such a bad deal at less than $129/lb. ;) ! Might be a good deal for a couple of you guys to go in together on?

I stand corrected. I have talked to 2 reputable sources, Warther being one of them, and $180 is the going rate now. The last 2 years have seen a serious increase on ivory prices, a fall in tusk availability and that is why.

For the record, though... I did confirm that I bought some at $110 a couple years back. I had to do that for my own comfort since so many guys called BS on me earlier. I just failed to mention that it was 2003. lol.

There is a difference in pricing that some are not considering here. $200 per pound is usually for the prime chunk out of the solid part of the tusk. There is very little waste when making parts and slabs out of it. Whole tusks bring less per pound usually because of the hollow and tip. The $3000 is probably fair on this tusk if it is a nice tusk.

I actually researched this a little bit after my original post. I have talked to 2 people who know details about this tusk. They both tell me that this tusk is a very nice one and would probably work out well for cue parts. $3000 is a very fair price considering what I have heard about this tusk and ivory prices in the past couple of days.

If I had $3k in reserve, I would be all over it like thigh fat on a dixie chick. I don't, so someone else can get lucky this time.

At least with David you know what you are getting!
Top quality, and generations of knowledge.

I bought a tusk from david 4 or 5 years ago and it was $160 lb at that time. I am just going to grow my own elephants from now on, It's cheaper that way Chris.

I'll supply all the peanuts for some small pieces of the tusks.

Come to Tucson in Jan/Feb for the worlds largest gem and mineral show to get wholesale prices on ivory. My dad restores guitars and bought a small tusk of excellent quality for $85/lb to use for bridges and saddles. Many of the tents are for vendors only, but there are ways to get in. I saw a bunch of below average quality for $70/lb.
