I was lucky to get to spend a lot of time with Jersey Red in Houston in '88 and '89. He was still recovering from a slight stroke but he could still play. He was playing the better 1P players around Houston 8-no count.
He was a real character too. He could tell pool stories for days on end and never tell the same one twice.
There was a big trade show at the George R. Brown convention center and he and I were hired to work the booth for a table retailer. Boxing champ, Larry Holmes, was working the booth on one side of us and the Playmate of the year was working the booth on the other side. The second day of the show Larry and the Playmate were in our booth all day playing pool with Red. That's the kind of personility he had.
BTW, in his younger days he was a pitcher for one of the Yankees minor leauge teams.
And your right about the name. Although most of the pool world knew him as Jersey Red, he always referred to himself as the "Red Raider".
