Great clip, Skor! I'm surprised there weren't more comments about it. Surely most have read On The Road? It's great reading for young rebels. How do I know? I was one of those in the early 1960's...
Even though this is in N.Y. the scene in San Francisco was similiar. I'm looking at Ginsberg's "Howl" right now. City Lights Bookstore, Ferlinghetti, Kenneth Patchen, Kerouac, Ginsberg. Blue Note and after hours Jazz. Henry Miller in Big Sur. Great, great time of exploration and experimentation. An era never to be forgotten or repeated.
Kerouac's interview on The Steve Allen show made me cry. Allen's incredibly hip piano behind Kerouac's reading elicited feelings that had been tucked away for years.
Thanks for this clip. It lead me back to revisit those years. Incredible stuff was happening at many points in he world.
Steve Allen pointed the way to what TV could have been. What a shame that it went the other direction. Our world today would be totally different had people like Steve Allen been able to keep the torch of humane, artistic life forces lit for the people to discover. Darkness overcame him and the others who made efforts so we ended up today with reality TV and Springer. It really is tragic.
Thank you for this thread. I really need to spend some time on youtube. There is some very good stuff there... VERY good stuff.
