Jacoby or Samsara? Advice needed!

Hi Guys,

I'm new here so first of all Hi!:D!! Sooooo.....I am in the market for a new cue....I have it narrowed it down to a Samsara or a Jacoby.
I have now been playing for two years with a Poison cue, and i Find the hit a bit stiff to my liking...I would like something just a bit softer...also i am looking to get myself a nice 30th birthday present!

From what i have read on here Jacoby cues tend to be a bit on the softer side which is why if i order one I would go for a SS joint...i think that this could be the hit I am looking for.

It is quite hard to find much info on here or the internet about the play of Samsara cues, from what I see all of their joints are Phelonic with a radial pin. Some peeps say they are on the stiffer end some peeps say they are a bit soft....conflicting info out there for sure.

Also it is impossible to test out either of these cues because i live in thailand and have no access to these.

So based on the info i have given which one do you think would suit me ?
Please if you have played either please let me know what you think!

Cheers!

I have a Jacoby and I like it a lot. It does have kind of a soft hit and you do have to get used to it. Never tried a Samsara so I can't comment on that cue. Good luck! I hope you pick the right cue for you.

I have been playing for over 20 years and i have played with many different cues i have had a couple of jacoby cues and was very happy with them i have found that a cue such as a samsara with a radial pin and a wood to wood joint with a phenolic ring generally has a stiffer hit than a steel joint cue hope that helps

Todd...so are you saying that a Jacoby with a phelonic joint and radial pin would hit harder than a jacoby with SS joint?

I can't really compare, because I've never played with a Samsara.

I do have an older Jacoby, a J-2 in cocobolo with the stainless
5/16 X 14 joint. It plays well, and I was pretty happy with it,
but I wanted a custom.

I now mainly play with a Josey but still carry the old Jacoby as a
back-up. Meaning..I have no plans to sell the Jacoby. Like I said,
I like it. It's just that I like my radial pinned flat faced Josey a bit
more.

I think you'd like a Jacoby. :)

(edit) Happy birthday!

Cues

I have had several Jacobys over time and would buy another one again in a heart beat. I have hit with a samsara and honestly think they play very similar. Although all my jacobys were wood to wood with a big pin.

Isn't Samsara's shafts tapered much stiffer ? Like 2MM taper in 12 inches ?

Taper

Not that I noticed but the one samsara Hit could have been tapered diffrent as the guy who had it does tend to play with shaft tapers a little. I wil have to ask him if he modified it.

Jacoby makes a nice cue. I would without a doubt recommend Samsara. They are top notch in construction and hit as well as anything out there.

I have not played with a Samsara cue, but you can see from my signature line that I have played with a Jacoby or two (or three ;)). I have two Jacoby's with SS joints. They are not stiff-hitting cues. But....I wouldn't exactly say they hit soft either. Somewhere in the middle I would say. I like mine a LOT, and from reading what type of hit you are seeking, I think you too would like a Jacoby. I'll say this, I haven't ever read any bad reviews about one. That speaks volumes!!!

You cannot go wrong with either. That being said, If I were to go with either one I would take Jacoby. Now, not the Jacoby off the shelf mind you. I would have it custom made to me. If I were to have all my stuff stolen, I would in a second call Jacoby up and get one started.

Jacoby all the way, but it is all in what you like. You can get a Jacoby configured any way you want. Stainless joint, wood to wood joint, ivory joint, radial pin, 5/16 x 14 piloted pin....whatever you want. They do have plenty of stock cues, but they can also make anything you can draw on a piece of paper. I am a Jacoby dealer (among others), and I became one because of the Craftsmanship and the Company in general. David and Brian Jacoby are nicest, most honest people you could ever want to deal with, and they really stand behind their products. That being said, if you are in the market PM me and we can talk about what you are looking for and what we can do for a price.

Thanks

I have played for many years with a Jacoby sneaky pete and have had several other cues over the years. The primary factor to me is the shaft taper. I like Mike Bender's taper and have mine tapered similarly. To each their own though. I'm sure that most players would say that their cue "hits a ton" whatever that means.

Hi guys....thanks for all your responses, and since all of you have such good things to say about Jacoby, i have ordered a cue from them...it still needs to have the finish applied and will be ready in 2 weeks !:grin-square:

Here is a pre finish pic of my future cue!

Jacoby! They have great customer service before and after the sale. They can make anything you want or buy off the shelf. Dave and Brandon are 2 top notch cue makers. They also do a great job refinishing cues.
