Jay Flowers Cases

JB... dude, SWEET cases.

I like your handles especially. I always thought the leather strip used for the "frame" of the Flowers handles was way too thin.

I also like the turn clasp closure for the case, and some combination of that and a D-ring or hinge would be perfect. If I was going to use the case to store assembled cues, as in a tournamenet match, I never knew what to do with the lid when I snapped it off. And if you use leather as a "hinge" as in the older turn clasp Flowers, it fails after too short a time to even consider.

As far as cosmetic designs, I tend towards pretty conservative designs, both in cues and cases. I like what I see on your site (BTW the "ZACK" case seems to solve the "which strap" question, for left hand or shoulder carry... GOOD JOB!!!). Something like that with a slightly different pocket arrangement would suit me fine.

It might just be time to update and order something new to go with the Davis / Richards full spice I have coming soon.

If you can describe I can build it. Mostly. :-)

I actually do have a hinge design in leather that I stole from a top German leather worker named Rene Berends. He did a leather box with this sweet hinge made of leather. I was able to create a similar one after a lot of trial and error to get the dimensions right but I haven't used one on a case yet.

The handles you like came from Murnak mostly (if you are referring to the ones I think you are). I mean I have seen these same handles on a lot of leather gear over the years but Jim Murnak was the first one who incorporated them into cue cases and I patterned mine after his. I like the way that this handle feels in your hand, supple but solid.

For the turn clasps, when we do them I use the new Jiasen clasp that has a molded base to take the stress. Normal turn clasps are light duty and not made to take the weight of cue cases. Jiasen's are custom made just for cue cases. I also use line snaps which tend to work well.

Anyway feel free to contact me any time and see if we can't come up the "perfect" case for you.

dirtypool ... Thanks for the pics that was a pleasure to view ... Very nice case by the way...

IN case anyone cares this mystery has been cleared up. The maker's mark is NVH and stands for Nora Van Horn. Nora was the case maker for Jay Flowers. You can find more information at Chris Tate's website www.palmercollector.com

With the introduction of the J.Flowers Tribute series of cases Chris was contacted by both Nora Van Horn's family and Jay Flowers' daughter. He now has a very good personal account of how Jay and Nora made and sold cue cases.

Beat me to it John! I wonder if it was ever cleared up to everyone in this old thread, if not it is now. On a side note, I may have acquired two other original JEF Q cases, with Noras stamp. If the deal goes through I will be posting them for sale in a few weeks.

It was certainly a shocker to me. How could he have kept Nora a secret for all those years? Fortunately, she refused to make a case without her signature. Hopefully this little lesson is not lost on artisans who take pride in their work.
