Yes, when taking straight pool and nineball into account, Jean is without equal in the history of women's pool.

The only woman player I've ever seen that plays straight pool near the level Balukas played it is Jeanette Lee, who has countless hundred ball runs, including a 152 against me and a 124 against Mika Immonen. In 1999, Lee put her straight pool skills up against the best men at the National Straight Pool Championships in NYC, and in races to 150, she beat John Ervolino, Jimmy Fusco and Dallas West in succession. Yes, all were past their respective primes, but it remains a great accomplishment that serves testament to her excellence at straight pool. In a very elite field, she finished as high as both Robles and Immonen.

Cheers SJM,
Mrs.Breedlove can play one pocket too and kick some....

I agree. I saw Vivian play against a small time local pool hustler in Florida and she got drilled in a set for $500. I don't think Allison or Karen could beat a lot of lower level players on the tough tables you find in most pool halls around the country.

What does Vivian's level of play have to do with that of Allison Fisher? Since 1/1/99, Allison has won 22 WPBA titles to Vivian's zero. Yes, zero.

20 guys, $500 each = $10K

I happen to know that $500 wouldn't be anything to, Vagabond. The man has $$$. How about recruiting 19 other guys to put $500 in and play the, Red Riffle, a set? A or K. You pick-um. I respect, Jean, too much to include her.

Interesting. Though I rarely play one pocket, I once played MISTER Breedlove some one pocket. We raced to three and I beat him 3 - 2. Oh, did I forget to mention that George shot with one hand? Had fun that time!

Hey, Vagabond, sounds like I got some folks wanting to put in with me and Jamie. I thought the $10K was a bit more than you were use to betting so that's the only reason I suggested pooling money with others. Yea, I think I can get, Humphrey, to put in with me to stake, Jamie. If A or K can beat, Jamie, they can win much more that $10K. I guarantee you if we lose the first set we will play another. You guys that believe in A & K can all get your teeth fixed if she can beat the, Red Rifle. $500, 20 of ya. Hey, take a shot at some serious $$$.

Probably so, Vagabond. Appreciate you letting me out of the trap by not betting. You gotta be one of the good guys. Cheers.

I have heard stories from knowledgeable pool players who watched Jean Balukas play back in the 70’s, one of whom stated, “She played like a man.” He explained that she broke the balls well, could draw the cue ball back the length of the table on a long shot and could execute the shots that required strength and power (jacked up, extreme follow, etc.). On slower equipment, he said there would be an even wider gap between her ability and the rest of the women of today. Jean didn't have any weaknesses because of her powerful stroke. He went on to say, “If Jean Balukas was allowed to play on the men’s tour back then, she would have beaten a lot of the guys.” Any comments?

I have posted a poll on who I think would be the top 3 female nine-ball players if they were all in stroke.

No disrespect meant to Jean, but the bar has been raised since she played. Even on the men's tour, but much more so with the ladies. I watched Jean play many times when she was in her prime. She was as dominating as Allison and Karen have been. And yes I watched her play in open events where she beat men pro's. Watched her beat the Miz at the infamous "Tamoshanter" tournament! Of course it was approaching 100 degrees in the tournament room and Jean was in great shape, where the Miz was at the other end of the scale! No pun intended :)

Jeannie did have a powerful stroke, and used it a lot! She also made more of the difficult shots than the ladies of today, but that isn't because she played better, she got out of line more often! She left herself in tougher spots and by doing so looked impressive when she got out of a jam! Allison plays such perfect position and has such a controlled game that she doesn't look like she's doing anything spectacular!

Jean was the greatest woman player of her time but I don't think she'd like her end of it with either Allison, Karen or even Jeannette nowadays! Jeannette's game has stepped up a knotch or two IMHO.

Well, I'm a huge Jeanette fan, so it's very painful for me to disagree. Still, objectively speaking, it would be fair to say that before she gave up pro pool, Jean was able to dominate both Loree Jon Jones and Robin Bell (later known as Robin Dodson) in their respective primes. In the mid 90's, Jeanette won her share over those two, who were still playing their best pool then, but certainly wasn't able to dominate them. In terms of titles and overall track record, Jeanette's career has been, more or less, on a par with Jones and Bell, two very deserving Hall of famers who simply aren't mentionable in the same breath as Balukas.

As for Allison and Karen, the case is much stronger. My best guess is that Allison plays nineball a little better than Jean did, and that Jean played nineball roughly as well as Karen does now. Hey, we'll never know.

I throw the guantlet of challenge!!!

If straight pool is included, Jean is hands-down the best ever, and it probably should be. But if we're talking nineball only, and I've had the opportunity to compete against both Jean and Allison, it's another story. I first saw Jean play when she was only twelve. I saw her in her prime in eight different world championships and probably saw her play about 70 pro matches. I wonder if anybody other than Jean's parents have seen more of her matches than I have, and her parents have said the same thing to me. I have probably seen Allison Fisher play in about 30 WPBA events, and have probably seen her play over 100 pro matches. Having said all that, my opinion is just an opinion, but I think it's an educated one.

In my view, Allison plays nineball better than Jean ever did, but not by much. I'm sure the legendary status of Jean will cause her to win this poll, but she doesn't deserve to:

Jean broke the balls better than Allison
Which of them ran the table better is too close to call
Allison plays much better defense than Jean ever did
Allison kicks far better than Jean ever did

The old schoolers who lost to Jean would have us all to believe that Jean played far better than any of the ladies of today because it's good for their self-esteem (LOL), but it just ain't so.

Still, I don't feel my post would be complete without one last comment. If Jean had Allison and Karen around, it would have pushed her nineball game to a higher level than she ever attained, one I personally suspect would have been higher than that of either Fisher or Corr.

A "what if" for the ages............

sjm,

I'm working on the details for the NJ Women's 9-Ball State event as we post. Karen Corr is the Defending Champion. What would it take to have a dream event?

Hi, Barbara, hope you're well.

Jean has shown no inclination to make a comeback for fifteen years now, so it's hard to imagine how you could possibly pull it off. One thing's for sure, though, if you do pull it off, I'll be there sweating it.

I saw Mr. Breedlove shooting his one-handed jumps and wing shots a couple of weeks ago. Very impressive indeed! I do have to say, however, I made a pretty sporty one-handed shot as well...lol. However, I couldn't duplicate it, but I got it on the first try and that's what counts!

Here's the shot, one handed on one leg...lol:

While at the Mini Black Widow Experience I saw George break, I believe, 37 mph, pretty darn impressive if you ask me. I topped out at 21 mph :(

Yeah, George just crushes those balls. The guy today who has that kind of break is Charlie "Hillbilly" Bryant.

FYI, one time at Valley Forge I went on the radar gun at one of the exhibits. I hit three breaks, all of them between 22 and 24 mph. Next up was Tiffany Nelson. Have to admit I was humbled when she registered 24.8, but she does break those balls well.

I know what you mean. I think Jeannette, Helena and Monica all broke faster than I did. I know proudly tell people I break like a girl...lol.

I never saw Balukas play in person, but I have a video of her playing Ewa Mataya in one of the finals where Balukas is on her 18 tournament run winning streak (or however long it was). I know Balukas was a great player, but I don't think she was better than Allison Fisher, or maybe Karen Corr at her best. In the tape I have Balukas does not play that well, losing the first set but winning the second to win the tournament. I've seen Allison play a lot, and I've never seen her play as poorly in a finals match, or any match for that matter, as Balukas does on that tape. I also think that the competition today among the women is 1,000 times better than it was then. Allison can play perfect and perfectly controlled pool for long stretches. I know Jean Balukas was a great player, she is practically a living legend, but all things considered my vote has to go to Allison.
