Jeff Olney 6 Point cue (3 high Amboyna Burl & 3 Low Ebony? points) into a BEM forearm

I am sorry. I thought I read somewhere on here that they were similar. Maybe just similar in looks. My mistake. I am curious though (for those that have played with a Southwest, for a good amount of time), are there any other cue makers that make a similar hitting cue (similar to Southwest)? Richard Harris (Bluegrass cues) maybe, or any others?

Just curious, but I wonder how big of a fan base Olney has (compared to some of these other cue makers, like Blue Grass for example)?

Are Olney cues not right up their with the quality of any of the elite cue makers out there? I was under the impression that Jeff Olney was one of the elite cue makers in the US.

Please be honest. Does Jeff Olney not have that big of a fan base (compared to many of the other elite cue makers)?

How popular are his cues?

Thanks.

The quality and consistency I have seen with Olney cues has been exceptional. I have owned close to 15 and played with a few more and the fit and finish on all has been *perfect* and the playability & feedback are superb. His point work is pretty amazing, too.

As for how they compare with SW cues, I personally find the hits to be similar despite what a couple guys said here. They both have stiff crisp hits and move whitey with great ease. Both give that nice <<ping>> when striking the cue ball and the feedback is terrific.

You said you wrote this because you read others have stated they felt these two brands hit similarly and I have read the same and agree. Not exactly the same hit but def strong similarities.

I'm curious from the guys who feel these two brands don't hit anything alike, can you provide some detail on the differences you have observed?

At the end of the day, hit and feedback are very subjective, I know.

I think JO cues are the absolute best value in custom cues under $1k, bar none.

there are other great values in this range out there no doubt, like Jensen, Diveney and Joss to name just a few but I still go with Jeff Olney, all day long.

all imo, of course.

best,

Agree with Brians take on the two makers. Seven years ago. I had a new South West that I played a little bit and it was def a very, very nice cue. Top notch build and it played very similar to my South West style Olney. I was in the cue $2,300 and just couldn't justify to myself keeping it so, I sold it, bought me another Olney a nice case and put $1,500 in my pocket.
I've owned 12 different Olney cues and all have been flawlessly crafted. Just my pinion
guys but, I have tried them both.

Jeff olney builds a great playing cue! Hope get mine soon!;)

What he said. I have owned 28 Olneys myself and they are the best bang for the buck imo.
I have been waiting on 3 more for a while :)

Thanks for your reply. I always imagined that a SW cue hits amazing, and I have read some opinions on the similarities in the hit of an Olney to the hit of a SW, and I even read somewhere on here that some prefer an Olney to a SW. I do not know. These are just things that I have read on this forum, when I was doing some research about Olney cues (before I decided to purchase the one I have now). I still hope to someday try out a SW cue, but when ever I have seen players with a SW in person, I have been to shy to ask them if I could hit a few balls with their SW (which they would probably say "no" to my request anyways). It takes a lot of trust to hand over such a valuable cue to another player. Who knows how much a SW refinish would cost (I do not know, but I imagine a lot). I would be very nervous holding on to another players SW cue. I imagine they hit super nice though.

I like olneys, but to me they don't hit like a southwest. May be the olneys I've played with, or the southwests I've played with. The southwests would have all been older cues, and to me they had a stiffer hit than the olneys with more feedback.

I like stiff hitting cues, and like both of them. I wouldn't buy a southwest for the money they bring today, too many good hitting cues out there that cost far less. Jeff's cues fall into that category to me.

I see you got standard shafts. I have seen that he is now making a LD shaft. Did you talk to Jeff about these new shafts by chance? I have an Olney cue and am thinking of calling him to make me a LD shaft

He sold it already. Brian.
