jerry mcworter does use cnc. but using cnc does not mean blunt points when finished properly. the maker simply sharpens the point by hand.

iconcue said:it's been on my site before! you still need to get your prescription updated for your glasses bru! points same length!![]()
JimBo said:They are CNC and they are not hand sharpened, but they are cut with a very tiny cutter (think smaller then a tooth pick, a bit bigger then a pin)and you do have to look close to see just how small. Most of the top guys today use CNC in many capacities, some designs you couldn't splice even if you wanted to. Once again I feel education is key since many people think bad thoughts with CNC and equate it to fat rounded points and inlays. I don't think it's my place to educate, but someone needs to I guess.

iconcue said:thank you jim! as always appreciate your educating comments! i assume you are speaking from first hand knowledge of jerry mcworters methods? i'm going to have to give him a call and see if he brings up having a picture of you that he would like to send mei don't doubt your knowledge of jerry mcworters methods - heck look what tony scianella can do with them itty bitty bits! but i do know of at least one maker that chooses to hand finish cnc'd points. but as you know jim i don't like to name drop. my main point was that cnc doesnt equal blunt points but thank you in taking the education a step further.
btw - do you like the cue???
JimBo said:I do have some nice pictures of me in Jerry's shop, maybe I'll get one right out to you. As far as the cue goes, I always like Jerry's designs, I liked this one the first time I saw it at last years DCC, your buddy Bill had the cue. I always see Jerry's mentor TW's influence when I look at his work. Jerry is second to none when it comes to siver work. Many makers DO hand cue points, but in this case the design doesn't really call for it IMO.

someone came up with a good name for the cue "whiskers"![]()

you'll are turning into a bunch of photography critics![]()
you got to remember the original is about four times the size of these pics displayed and any time you reduce or enlarge a file you are going to lose something.
i could post them as original but you can imagine how long they would take to load - but the silver lines and leather rings would be very appearent. but at this size to bring them out it would require a lot of photoshop time.
and jim if you look close enough you can see some leather dimples. plus when you were examining the cue you probably had it closer to your eyes than as displayed in the pic.![]()
JimBo said:The funny thing is one of the things I liked best about the cue when I first saw it was the bands of leather and looking at the picture (and it's another great one) you can't even notice that's what they are. Talk about optical illusions, very odd.

Matt_24 said:Jim,
Are you a cuemaker or "future" cuemaker? You definitely have a lot of knowledge to share on building techniques, and know your fair share of the top cuemakers.

JimBo said:I have put together a few cues in different shops and am in the process of building 2 right now, but I would never (ever , ever) call myself a cuemaker and I have no plans to become one. Due to certain circumstances I have been lucky enough to spend lots of time in some shops and have gotten to meet some very awesome cuemakers over the past 15 years. I find talking cues with these guys to be great fun and very enlightening. But I can say that I am better at starting trouble then sharing info here.

Matt_24 said:I think people may take you too seriously.
Probably, but that's what makes it fun.
Sounds like you know your stuff.
Don't let that get out, it will ruin my rep.
Everyone here is quite knowledgeable.
JimBo said:I'm not so sure about this line, but there are a few here who really do, most just think they do, but most of those guys are buying cues from Murrel, Schon and DZ. ;-)

Matt_24 said:DZ and Murrells are awesome!!.....what are you talking about? They all hit the same and...oh, did I mention I had one for sale?
