Bamacues said:What I said was that the quality of their (Scruggs/Rauenzahn) workmanship was often compared, ie, sharpness of points, quality of construction.
I don't really wish to debate this with you, you're wrong and you're new to the industry, I don't really see a point to it. Anyone who makes the comparison is being kind to Jerry, very kind, and I am in no way saying his cues aren't nice.
Call Timmy and ask him if he thinks Jerry makes a good quality cue for the money.
First of all just adding the "for the money" part is proof to what I'm saying, it shouldn't be there. As far as asking Tim about anyone (let alone another maker) is silly, Tim is a great guy and would never bad mouth anyone.
I think you will find that he will have nothing but good things to say about him.
And everyone else for that matter, do me a favor, call Tim and ask him about me:-D
Jerry survived in a very small market for a very long time.
Another bad point for your side of the argument. Small market??? That's funny! Some of the top guys in the industry live in places where you don't see a pool hall or a pool player for months, what is a big market? Is Baltimore a large cue market? there are about 6 cuemakers there, how about New Mexico, or Alaska LOL I know a bunch of cuemakers and not one of them have a drive up window, market has nothing to do with cues.
A great many cuemakers have come and gone in much less time. As Fred (I believe) said, you don't survive very long in this business by making crap.
Does he do cues full time? Is cues how he pays his bills?? I doubt it, the fact is there are very few people who survive on cue sales alone, there really isn't enough money in making cues to support a family, the fact is the overwhelming majority of guys in the business do it part time or as a hobby, the guys (one man shops) who depend on cues for their only source of income can probably be counted on 2 hands. In any event the fact that you like this guys cues is great and I'm not debating your view on him, it's just that a comparison with a legend is tough, and Tim is a Legend IMO.
