Jesse Bowman vs Norm Wines ?

Norm is one of the best BB players in the county if not the world.. why isn't he playing in the US bar table championships? He's not even allowed to play in the SBE anymore.

I've waited years to see Jesse play & two weeks ago I finally got my chance..... but he hid in his bedroom like a frightened old woman and never showed. (NORM WINS)

Never seen Jesse play but Norm would be a handful for anyone on a barbox. He's that good.

I had a very good player with me when i met Norman ( pittburgh Mike Katsaris) i wanted no parts of Mike playing Norm on the bar table, not that Mike didnt have a chance cause he did, but Mike had the worst of it, but Mike didnt want to hear that and keep begging me to put him in against Norm all nite long.

So after awile i got tired and Gave Mike some money and told him you can play anybody but Norman on the little table, iam going out in the car and going to sleep.

After about a few hours of sleep i go back in the pool room and Norm comes up to me and hands me some money and i say whats this for and Norm goes this is half of what Mike lost to me, i say what do you mean i told him to play anybody but you, Norm said yes i heard you tell mike that but he would not stop begging me to play, so we played and i beat him out of 400 and iam giving you half of it back.

Now tell me Norman Wines isnt a stand up guy!

I'd also include you into this equation. Norm knew you and your character, and that goes hand in hand with good business. Norm treats the game like work in all aspects. We played a couple times on the 9' in Olathe quite a few years back. Hill Hill three balls on the table my shot. Cue ball near the spot, 8 ball by the upper left hand corner pocket about a diamond and half from the pocket and almost frozen. The nine is sitting on the same side of the table down by the cue ball...about 6'' off the rail and about 1/2 diamond away from the pocket. I bank the 8 ball 4 rails and leave the 8 ball about foot away from the upper r/h corner pocket, but played my cue ball perfect 4 rails and put the cue ball completely behind the 9 and its hillahilla for $2K My money. He of course kicks at the 8 ball one rail off the l/side long rail and not only hits the 8 with r/h english but makes it and the cue ball hit two rails and came down table and gave em a straght in. In 50 yrs of play, have never been beat in such a manner. But stormin' norman could play, he kinda reminds me of Coy Lee or Erman Bullard, old school, play till ya drop and BET it up, and yeah, been playin probably every day for over 40 years.

Norm played great 10 or 15 years ago when I used to see him .
That would have been a great match.
I saw him many times gambling and I know of several times he could have gotten backers in bad games and did not , even though he needed the money at the time.
They don't come any more honest than that!

I would rather see the Bowman vs Bobby McGrapth match up right now, booby seems to have quit drinking and has found another level!

This has been a really interesting thread. I always love reading great pool stories, about road players. This is so interesting to me. I wish threads like this came up more often. I never heard of Norm Wines, but he sounds like a really great player.

I have played Porky several times in tournaments, but never in a cash game. I guess I will never forget the last time I played him. We were both at a tournament down in Indiana, one of the old McDermott tour stops if I recall correctly. (long time ago, two decades at least)

The last time I had played him before this tournament, I had knocked him out of the tournament we were both in. At this stop, we had to play again, winner was in the cash. We knew we had a pretty good wait before we got to play, several hours at least.

He was on a table practicing for about an hour, and couldn't stand it any longer. He was just itching to play me and get revenge. He finally went over to the tourn. director and begged her to let us play on an open table. She relented, and we started play. I think I had maybe one turn at the table. lol.

I figured he would win, especially as bad as he wanted to win. He got his revenge, but he can never take away the fact that I beat him once! Even if it was just in a tournament. I did get a chuckle out of our match though. To this day, I have never seen anyone so hyped up to play, and so happy when they trounced me. I actually felt good that he was so happy. Aahh, the good ol' days. :D

Rest in peace Norm, it was fun watching you play. You were a animal on the table.

I never heard the name but I've heard of Phil wines and I've heard him called Michigan Phil so if Norman wines was a great player from Michigan n Phil is a great player from Michigan is there any relation?

Don't know, sorry. Norm was a great player strong enough to win the men's open @ SBE 2-3 times then Allan Hopkins told him he could not play anymore and that he would have to play the pro side if he wanted to play the expo.
