"JH" Custom Cases Pics--Diane

I just posted some pictures of my latest Piercy Exclusive Cue that I had Marshall Piercy make for me. I also mentioned that I make custom cases that I don't sell but make for myself and friends. I know that picture space is limited on this forum so I might post some pictures of one case on this thread and then post a few more threads with some pictures of others.

This is a case I made for a friend of mine. My wife calls her my girlfriend. I WISH!! I also made her two custom cues. Not too sure if my wife knows about those. Anyway, this was a real unique leather that was half "sanded" and half left smooth leather, so it is half suede and half finished leather. I put her name in raised letters in the case. I've never seen anyone else do raised letters like this in a case. I now do it in all my cases and put my initials, "JH" in raised letters somewhere on the case. This is a 3 butt 4 shaft case with covered tubes inside.

I've gone through about 5 different styles of cases over the years and I have finally come up with the style of case that I like the best and I think is the most professional of all the cases I've made. I think they are as secure as any other case on the market and have eye appeal to many people. I've sold over 100 cases on eBay in the past but no longer sell cases. I can spend 10 hours tooling the leather and another 12 hours making the case and no one seems to appreciate a one-of-a-kind leather case made by a small production case maker in the United States. So, that's why family and friends get them.

Rusty Melton and Jack Justis are booked solid as far as I know. People will pay for cases made by makers they know and built how they like. As Henry Ford famously said if your stuff isn't selling then your price is too high for what you are trying to sell. People don't pay just because you do it they pay because they want it.

Your cases are cool and unusual and maybe you will find an audience here for this style. I don't know how well built they are or how protective they are. But they are very interesting from my perspective as a case maker.

You do beautiful work. There are some people who don't mind paying more for something exceptional. That's why they make Ferrari's and Lamborghini's. I've had several SUV's before, but now I own a Porsche Cayenne which is a cut above the rest! It costs a bit more as well.

JB: Thanks for the kind words and encouragement. I'm not interested at all in selling any of my cases, although my wife probably would like to see some of them gone, along with about half my pool cue collection, but just make them because I enjoy it. I would never claim to be in your league when it comes to making cases, but I'm happy with the style I have come up with, as well as the quality. I gave one to Willie Olhausen that I personalized, as well as a cue that I made. It just gave me satisfaction to hear him say how happy he was with both the cue and case. I've made cases for a few local pros, maybe some just wannabe pros, and one for Robin Dodson many years ago, and they still mention to me when they see me that they still like the cases, so that is enough for me. I make maybe 6-8 cases a year but will most likely make more when I retire. As anyone who makes solely one-of-a-kind "anythings" can tell you. The hardest part is to come up with fresh ideas for each item, no matter what the product is. I could never do this for a living because I'd run out of ideas real quick, although I did make over 100 one off cases many years ago and sold them all on eBay. Funny thing was that these were all what I called "soft hard cases" and I was getting $275 for almost every case. The market has changed so much on eBay that the cases I make now, which are a ton better than the old ones, I'd probably be lucky to get $150 to $175 for them, and, knowing what I have in them and how long they take me to make, I would take that as an insult and would rather give them away than sell them for that price. Also, I'm lucky enough to not need to make money on cases I make, which really is a blessing. When people offer me some ridiculously low price for a cue I've made, which I don't sell, either, I just tell them that I'd rather throw it in the fireplace than sell it to them for such a low price. Don't know if they get the hint or not.

Anyway, keep up the good work and I hope business is good for you. I've got two of your cases and will probably buy more in the future. Other than the cases I make I have about every maker case out there. Good thing I don't have any interest in selling any of these cases because a lot of them are personalized with my name on them. Makes it kind of hard to resell unless someone happens to have the same name.

Also, are you aware that out-of-the-box cue designer, Piercy, had done some az members wrong a while back?

No, I'm not Marshall Piercy. Yes, I was aware of problems he has had in the past, including with me, notably. After about 6 or 7 years of no contact with him I finally got back in touch with him because I really wanted more of his cues. We have mended fences I find him to have grown into a changed man, at least with my dealings with him. He is currently making me another cue.

I posted the picture of his cue in the Main Forum under Piercy Exclusive Cue. Hope you can find it.

Marshall is definitely a character. Now, come on. How boring would life be without some Marshall's in it?
