JJ vs. JB Case review:

OK, here's my plan:

IF i get enough interest, then I'll continue with this project. This is NOT the place for anyone to say how great they think which one is based on owning only one, or some other reason, ok? If you want to do this, start your own thread, please.

If I get, say 10 people here that are debating which one of these to get, and they either PM me for anonymity, or say it here, I'll continue. Anonymity is guaranteed for those that ask, BTW.

After this, I'll PM both case makers and explain my comparison, tests, and evaluation strategy, and then ask their permission to continue. If one of them says no, I'll drop the whole thing. I will however, disclose which one, or both, whoever asked me not to continue. There will be no gratis cases, or hand picked ones, either. I was going to buy a new case anyway, this just speeds me up a little.

If enough people object here, or give me a good enough reason via PM, I'll drop it, also, as I have the greatest respect for both of them.

Also, a mod can ask me, and I'll drop it like a running chain saw I'm holding at the wrong end.

The time to stop this is now, as I will be as impartial as I can be, and nothing will be sugar-coated.

What say you?

This thread is asking for trouble...good luck to you.

Well I am in. There will be around 28 cases that my shop has made on display at the upcoming West Coast Cue Show this weekend if anyone cares to inspect them there.

Plus I am sure that there will be a few people running around then with some that they have had for a while.

I will also be happy to BUILD any case that Jack does. Let him make any case he wants to for the comparison and I will make my best version of it and then we can really compare apples to apples for the money.

Maybe get a select few to judge both of your cases. Maybe cuemakers?

Oh I love my JB Flowers Tribute Case!!

No can do on my watch, sorry. Somebody else can if they want. Here's why:

I have a small problem with cue makers giving advice on stuff like this. First of all, everybody sees things through their own rose colored glasses. With their own tint. What this means is that most everybody has an ax to grind, whether they know it or not. I'll admit to mine, too. For a cue maker to review a case is like asking a dentist to evaluate brain surgery (probably the other way around). Plus, this is for the players, the buyers, the ones that never get the real skinny, usually.

What's my ax? I'll admit it here publicly for all to see, and to the best of my ability.

I've seen these guys go at each other for a very long time. I mean, a long time.
So, I'd like to see both of them stop showing their asses in public over this stuff. I mean, sure, it's ok to have a disagreement over a pin by cue makers, for example, but they usually keep it simple and on point. So, we ALL learn something in the process.

However, like the rules state right here in the FAQ, attacking a person's character, or motives is the stuff for children, and will not be tolerated. I concur.

Plus, on a personal level, I want to see it stopped. I also have a few questions I'd like answered, too. Maybe I'll do a show-and-tell for some 9 level APA guys, or some shortstops I know, or even head to Hard Times one week-end for some input by the real pros, if that's what's required. But, not anyone with a bias, or a tint they can't deal with, or any other reason.

IF these guys really want the public to know the facts from somebody with no ax to grind (other than what I have disclosed), then I'm all for doing the work.

It should be good for the end consumer, but maybe not so good for the participant(s).

So, any reasonable input from the AZ crowd is appreciated. Those that have an agenda........not so much.

I may not have covered all the bases, but I am trying like hell.:o

This will never work.

1. Because Jack is so proud, he thinks he already has a superior case.

2. Because this would really not be good for either casemaker in my opinion.

3. It will be a HUGE embarassement to the loser.......and I dont think that is necessary.

4. There will be so much ammunition to RUB in the other guys face.

5. Comparing the 2 cases are like comparing an apple to an orange, unless Jack is willing to change his apple into an orange or whatever fruit he feels like being.

I just dont think this is a good idea for either casemaker. But thats just my opinion

My glasses are fuschia tinted thank you. :-)

I am down with this wholeheartedly. Since my RSB days I have always been the first to stand up and offer to send my product to an INDEPENDENT and UNBIASED reviewer for direct comparison.

Why? Because even if I "lose" the review then I will take whatever the other guy does better and figure out how to do it in order to make our product better.

For example, although I don't believe Jack's "reason" for making his interiors so loose fitting I can actually see merit in the idea of doing an easily removable interior ON PURPOSE.

The idea being that one could have a bunch of interiors sitting at home being used as storage cases and when you want to take our the SouthWest set you just take out the interior on your case and put the other one in.

I certainly believe I can develop this where the fit and finish looks great and the customer doesn't feel any looseness nor see any gaps at the top AND the interior is still very easy to remove.

So, like I said, if apples to apples are going to be compared show me a picture of ANY Justis case that will definitely be used in the test and I will make as close to a replica of it as I can. For all I care it can be destroyed after the test.

We will do the very best job we can and then it can be our best against his best. Start with the sticker price and go down the line.

Possibly.

2. Because this would really not be good for either casemaker in my opinion.

Maybe not for him but for me it and opportunity to be compared and measured on OBJECTIVE points rather than have to compete against hype and mania-oriented marketing.

3. It will be a HUGE embarassement to the loser.......and I dont think that is necessary.

Not to me. I am never embarrassed by honest comparison. If someone else, ANYONE ELSE, does something that is better than what I do then I will find a way to do it if it will improve our product. I will certainly try it out in our shop and evaluate it.

4. There will be so much ammunition to RUB in the other guys face.

Doubtful. I doubt highly that anything will come of it that hasn't already been dissected here. The difference hopefully would be that the review is untainted by personal prejudice.

5. Comparing the 2 cases are like comparing an apple to an orange, unless Jack is willing to change his apple into an orange or whatever fruit he feels like being.

Not quite. They are both cue cases with the same function. One has more padding the other less. Both are pieces of leather with some decoration on them and put together with glue, thread, and rivets. Not rocket science.

I just dont think this is a good idea for either casemaker. But thats just my opinion

I think it's a great idea for me. I welcome the same sort of OBJECTIVE comparison to any other case maker's work.

I mean of course I think that we provide the best value, have the best protection, yada yada yada - but when I say it then it's still going to be seen as marketing. When a product is thoroughly reviewed FAIRLY by an independent source and without bias then everyone can see if the maker's claims are valid or not. If not then oops better go back to the drawing board. And that includes whatever one competitor says about his competition.

JB, thanks for weighing in, and you have had your say. Fair enough? <no need to answer> No more bandwidth from you, please.

I, and we all, will now wait for JJ to state his desires, and his opinion of this test.

I also realize that, with so much at stake, much is being done to make this test moot, and invalid. Rest assured, that I will do this test, unless someone with some juice, convinces ME otherwise. Even in that situation, I can do it on another forum or site or on my own, if I choose. If someone wants it stopped, they had better PM me fast, with a very good reason.

I can't be be bribed, intimidated, or threatened..........at all. I'm a life member of the VFW, and for those that understand, it is what it is:cool:

John, I know you donate cases to players to help with travel and tourney expenses which is awesome, I do believe Jack does too. How about we get some casemakers to get together to have a build off and donate the cases to AZB for the players fund they have? Would be nice to see you all work together and also what you will be coming up with. I am constantly blown away by the stuff that comes out and as you know I cannot wait for mine much longer, I am super excited to see what you come up with for me.

Well I am going to make a statement that some on the forum will not like, but IMHO both JJ & JB make GREAT CASES....Plus so does Rusty, Ron Thomas, and a few other IMHO.......LET END THE FIGHTING OVER CASES.

I totally agree with you on this one Cocobolocowboy!

Think a good idea is for JJ & JB to do a Case Build off of a JB Flowers, and JJ Plane Jane two pocket model in 2 x 4. I will review both products, and return to JJ & JB at my expense to stop the Cue Case Wars.
