What are some jobs former pro players might be good at?

Besides the obvious:
1. House pro instructor
2. League or Tournament Promoter/Director

Your pro career winding down?

Just trying to consider from a writing perspective what might prevent older pros from pursuing different jobs.

The list is limited, but it just might need more time thinking about.

The big skills they have are traveling, going to different customer locations and being friendly. Perfect skills for traveling salesperson, or organizational rep.

But those are jobs for being employed. I was having a tough time thinking about jobs for self-employment. A former pro would need at least some interest in something outside of pool to at least try a different job.

Whatinell is "from a writing perspective? What are you writing? a thesis? a novel? an article?

Lotsa folks make the decision to be "self employed" some are carpenters, some are other craftsmen, some are salesmen and some are gamblers. Most of us made the choice with little or no thought to "when we get old", so now I'm an old carpenter. got about as much chance of changing stripes as an old hustler (pro player)

Individually we all have strengths and weaknesses, I doubt that "pro players" are much different:grin:

If you are scared to try other jobs because of poor planning, just say so. Being scared happens to most intelligent people. Especially if business is dry and something needs to happen.

Just because your scared it doesn't mean people might not think your qualified. Ever hear the expression a few bad apples in the bunch, well "bad apples" need to be replaced. It takes some time to find a apple that is better than a bad one.

Meaning apply for jobs, despite your fears. Or start a company or store or service, just try as long as its within your budget and you won't have to go trolling the internet for work. Employers or customers can recognize bad apples and good apples. Some like bad apples but most know good apples are good for the community.

Locksmith.
Dog Pound (they're used to woofing and barking)
Garbagemen (they clean up the trash others leave)
Gigolo (they "get out" often and put it in the h*le) :sorry:
Engineers (they're good at making bridges, aren't they?)

Careers retired pro level players may consider:

Those that ekked out a living from the game with less than pro level talent can be a success at pretty much any endeaver they pursue

#1&2 ain't easy....

Working with the public in some capacity would be a natural. Stay away from heavy labor? Pretty much, all else goes.

Different in that they don't actually have a profession, there is no such thing as a "Professional pool player". They can't depend on making any money from one month to next. Most pros, even the successful ones could not qualify to buy a car much less a home or live what most would even consider a modestly comfortable life style. You see them on here all the time when they get sick or something having a friend beg for money to pay their bills. Or they are actually looking for someone to pay their entry fees in a tournament. Most live one step away from the street, I would not call that a profession.

Most self employed people do it with at least a dream of a solid secure future based on their own work and creativity in their chosen business. Many even become quite wealthy and create good futures for generations to come who may come into the business or through opportunities it provides. Pool players live "Hand to mouth" with little to look forward to that would change that fact. No insurance, many don't even have the brains to pay taxes and get locked into SS or Medicare. They live for today. I doubt many people would trade their lives for the life of a pool player if someone held a gun to their heads.

There are more than a few exceptions to these opinions, but for the most part, I agree. I imagine that MOST of the best two or three hundred poolplayers in the world (certainly in America) have some type of other money coming in, be it from a job, or a wife/significant other to support them.

bump 'cause I want to know what Num wants to know and why?

Are you having trouble reading English.

I am not a Adult Literacy teacher, if you need help reading go pay for a class.

Don't be cheap, trying to get attention for pointless comments.

Wow, sorry, I still don't understand your quote "from a writing perspective"??

and why haven't you answered any of my questions?

And what is your meaning of this "Don't be cheap, trying to get attention for pointless comments."?

I do have a fairly comprehensive knowledge of the english language substantiated by my bachelors degree. What are you suggesting that I'm missing??

If you say were to say that cow equals steak you cannot say steak equals cow, because the cow did not come from the steak, the steak came from the cow.

So, you really do not want to discuss your original post?
Cool, I'm out.
Sorry again, I falsely assumed you were looking for an intelligent discussion based on your original postings. I won't make that mistake with you again.
Good shooting,
thom

Well, obviously time spent discussing is time you could have spent getting into fistfights, watching ultimate fighting on pay-per-view, and driving monster trucks. Duh.

thommy,

No worries... customs is being ultra slow these days and as soon as Justnum's package arrives he will be well medicated and gone for a few weeks again... That he espouses to be a teacher scares the bejesus out of me but he is far from here so I risk no damage to either of my offspring....
