Hi all,

Recently, a friend asked me about Joe Kerr. He said that Joe had been pretty ill the last time he saw him. Does anyone know whether he's still around?

Yes sir

Joe Kerr passed July 6th 2008. One of the GREAT tournament directors.

Nothing against any other tournament directors out there, including my friend Mac Ashby from Indy {he's a fabulous tourney director}. But Joe had a very good way of making ALL the players feel welcome. I had been to several pro events, that he directed, and they always ran smooth. I don't recall ever hearing any complaints about them not being run fair, or any other problem. I have played in events thru the years where a top rated player was given preferential treatment of being late to a match, and not being forfeited. Or various other things.

The first tourney I played in, with him running it, he shook my hand and treated me like I was as welcome as Earl, Buddy, and Mike Sigel. He had never seen me hit a ball. That same tourney, I got into an argument with Mike Sigel, who was insisting guys like me had no right to be playing in the tourney with them. It was NOT a Pro event.

Joe was the very best as far as I am concerned.

Upon winning the 2008 World 14.1 title last August, Niels Feijen practically brought some of us to tears when, in his victory speech, he paid tribute to Joe Kerr, who passed earlier that same summer. Joe was one of the good guys in our sport and is sorely missed.
