Long story short this Wed night I put on an event for some friends with Johnny Archer and Earl Strickland. I had found out that none of the local rooms were going to book them for an exhibition. That soon changed. We or I booked them.

It was billed as the 1st Annual Night With The Pros. I limited the total amount and then started trying to make it into a good event for all. I was able to pick up some sponsors to help out. A big thanks for TMT Industries, DCGA Engineers and Plain Jane Embroidery.

The event was held at Dave & Busters in Ontario Ca. We started with a buffet and mingled.
Earl was first off and he did not disappoint. I was a little worried about the tables condition just because while they are good table they are not what Earl and Pros are used to playing on. Earl was a champ and was very very entertaining. Several people left saying that they now saw Earl in a different light. Personally I thought he was funny as hell and his stroke shots are very impressive.
He went on for an hour and everyone enjoyed it when he got into a few of his Rants!! Very entertaining!

Johnny then took a turn and played 9 ball. He asked questions, took questions and explained what he was thinking. He was very personable not only during this but for the entire night. He was very interactive with everyone.
Then we had arranged for some of the attendees to play with the guys. Literally... We played scotch doubles.. Team Archer vs team Strickland.
The attendees did not know who was playing so it was a big surprise to
everyone.
Both Johnny and Earl played great and were very entertaining during these 6 matches. Earl even went off a little bit on one of the players ...LOL. Earl told him to shoot it a different way and the guy didn't. He left Earl and little short of where Earl wanted to be and Earl let the whole place know it !! It was hilarious.

Then we had a free for all session with mingling, picture taking, autographs and questions. I can't say how pleased I was with the two guys. This lasted an hour and they left everyone pleased. Those type setting can be a bit aggravating sometimes with all the questions and pics and just getting pulled here and there. Both were GREAT !!

Every attendee had a T-shirt for them. Both Earl and JAs pictures were on the back with a spot to autograph underneath. There was also a nice logo as well as 1st Annual Night With The Pros. The guys signed everyone that needed to be signed.

We finished the evening off with the handing out of door prizes... over 20 total. Included were Cases, Measles Balls, a Break Jump Stick, about 10 $25 gift cards to different restaurants, Gift cards to Dave and Busters for $30, 5 or more $40 Powercard to D & Bs and then the biggest ones....
Two tickets to the Dodgers Vs D-backs, Premier Seats just up and behind the Dodger Dugout. We had two sets of those.

Everyone seemed happy and so far everyone is just saying that they can't wait until next year.

My hat is off to Johnny and Earl !! They did an excellent job and made new fans.

This group wasn't your hardcore pool players. Mainly league and billiard enthusiasts. They like to have a good time and are not shy in the least.
Beverages were flowing all night as was the fun !!!

Another kudo goes to the Dave and Busters staff. They worked with me very well and were very attentive to our needs. While we were in our own section we were still open. They blocked off the area and even did not rent anything near us for the entire night. It went very well with only a couple of minor hitches on my end.

I had a photgrapher there and he is getting the pictures together and everyone will have disc of the night. Over 150 pic from the 4 hours. I dont have those yet.

I will post a couple made with a friends camera.

Just wanted to share this and urge others to do something simliar with these guys. You will not regret it.

Congrats on setting up what sounds to have been an awesome event. It's good to see these guys getting some support from people within the billiard community. I hope they are booked solid.

Sounds like you had alot of fun I use to live in Riverside county ... A little distance from you but close enough that I could of been there and would of been there if I still lived there...lol.. I use to fly out of the Ontario Airport ... Now living here in Georgia home state for Johnny Archer ... Thanks for posting this and supporting the game ...

The way this all started was that they wer not getting any support. There was not a pool room that would book the guys. Hard to beat two of the greatest players ever.

It was a blast. The tickets to this were not cheap and I was a bit worried the FREINDS of mine might be disappointed. In the end everyone has already told me that they cant wait for another one.

Earl and Johnny did a great job!!

What was their apperance fee?Just curious.

I went through Mark Cantrill
You can reach him here. His screen name is bfdlad

I would hate to quote something that wasnt true.
I highly recommend trying to figure out a way to have an event. I thought
ours went well. I charged $100 per spot. There were 40 spots counting
JA, ES, Mark and a documentary guy. However, not all 40 were paid spots.
We had three companies help sponsor the event. Those companies received spots to attend and were on our Tshirts. Every little bit helped to put together the event.

I would have liked to have it on top notch Professional equipment but its hard to find the right venue to handle all the wants.

Now I know who frankncali is! I got there in time to catch the tail end of Earl's "performance" and I thought he did a great job of entertaining the crowd. It appeared to be a well organized evening of pool for all those gathered. You couldn't have had two better players, that's for sure.

Or a better host! Hat's off to Frank for making this happen.

Now isn't that a shame? Two of America's greatest ever 9-ball players and they were getting no support? Terrible! So glad you were able to put that together, though....

Sponsor

D & B should sign Earl and Johnny for a gig at each of their locations. This might turn their billiard business around. I wish they would do one in Evansville, IN at Jillians which is owned by D & B I think. I would be interested in trying to help get one there.

Good job Frank! I was at the "official" event at Stix in LA during the day on Wednesday and had a great time, and it sounds like you did too. BTW it seems that are also open to setting up private lessons, which I didn't know until I read the inimitable Fast Mikie's blog today, who managed to lure them to his hermit hole for some quality time. Apparently he even got to try out Earl's mystery weight sack.

Oh and the "documentary guy" is none other than the infamously eyebrowed Peer. I gave him some interview footage so hopefully he is going to make me into a super-star real soon now. (Just as long as he doesn't have any footage of me missing two easy balls playing my challenge game against Johnny Archer.)

Nice to finally officially meet you as well. I have seen you around and played in the Swannee events but never really met.

Johnny and Earl did great. Everyone loved it and is looking forward to doing it again. Several people have been calling Earl the Muhammed Ali
of pool.. Confidence is not something he is lacking in!

Hope to see you around LA

Hey Dan
I got your PM a little late. I went to Stix that afternoon to meet Mark and drop off some shirts. I should have asked which one you were.
I wasn't there long and tried to stay clear of the lessons area as I wasnt
a paying participant.

Didn't know it was Peer. I did meet him (sorta) at Stix. He was not feeling very well at all. Hopefully he started feeling better. He missed my
Night With The Pros.:(

Do you know where the footage will be shown?

No problem. You should make more shirts for Mark to use at the other events, people at ours were trying to buy them from him.

So who was the cameraman at your event then? I talking to Peer briefly about what he was doing and it sounds like he's going to edit it into a full documentary and may try to sell it commercially. Hopefully he'll make at least part of it available online.

Well done Mark Cantril,
Who put this event together, I know he has been working very hard in trying to promote pool over the last year and this is just another great way of bringing exposure to the game.

I think it is a great way to promote our sport. It will be through the grassroots efforts of many that pros and all players will have the support they need to become the best they can be. Hats off to Mark and Frank.

tony...Credit where credit is due here. Frank was the one who found and put together the program with Dave & Busters (remember, NO poolroom was interested in this event). Frank is the one who found the "sponsors" for the event. Mark does a great job, but in this instance, it was Frankincali who did all the real legwork...including 'finding' the people who ponied up the 'fee' to take part in this great event. Kudos to both Mark and Frank!

Watch it, buddy boy. Please realize that I got 6 hours of footage from those events... and, besides, I'm quite prolific in CGI. PM me and I'll give you my special Paypal account for bribery.

I'm okay now, but hey, I've never suffered as much diarrhea & puke in my life, but yet I tried my best to look & behave my best for you guys (which admittedly isn't very good to start with... but at least I did my best).
