WOW. Old threads really never do die. I've read this one before, but didn't post, that I can think of.
But, in JA's defense, I was coaching my son's baseball team a few years back. Bunch of 15 and 16 year olds, some pretty good players, including my son.
Of course, some "dad" see's my wife, and starts making small talk with her while she is keeping score.
Then, within 5 minutes is telling her everything I've done bad, mostly involving NOT playing his son in centerfield because that is where he plays on the HS team, and he needs the work. The kid was my best shortstop, actually, the only true shortstop on the team. And he liked it cause he never gets to play it in HS, cause there is someone better at short than him, so he likes to play it in this league.
But, here's dad, telling my wife how I'm messing things up, the batting order is all wrong, blah, blah, blah. OH, and he was very nice trashing me to my wife, he was smiling, and speaking softly, etc.
But what kind of ahole takes his problems to a man's wife. You got a problem with the team, come talk to me. You got a problem with me, come talk to me, you got a complaint, I'm only 10 feet away. My wife has ZERO to do with the team, thus she has ZERO input, and any complaints directed to her solve nothing. So, what is the true point of even going there ?
Who does this passive/aggressive bullshit anyways?
Next game, I see him and say, I heard you have a few concerns. And he says yes. I said if you think you can do a better job, the job is yours, I hand him the score book, and say, I'm ok with it, I can watch and b1tch from the stands, go ahead, run the team today, and if you like it, keep the job.
He wouldn't do it. I snatched the score book back from and said, "yeah, I didn't think so" And walked away. He was nothing but nice after that "encounter". Never heard a negative word again, and he never moaned about where his kid was playing. And I never put his kid in the outfield the entire season because the kid did not want to play there, and I didn't either
And yeah, we took first place in this competitive league, then won the playoffs, going a combined 15-2. His kid got the save in the championship game, with us up by 1 run. The kid throws hard, and they had the bottom of the order coming up in the last inning, my starter was "gassed", and we we're out of pitchers, as we burned through them during playoff DH we had the day before. I called him in. He had 3 K's, and we win.
I could not have written a better script if I wanted to.
