i had never heard of gabe. checking fargo he's 697. johnny is 754. discrepancies on both those numbers presumably? upwards trajectory and downward descent..

I never paid much attention to Johnny but even as a youngster I can't remember him having more than a jaybird mouth and a sparrow ass. If I had to make a list of pool players that could fight, johnny wouldn't make the list.

The one time we played, I don't remember Johnny saying a word between introductions and final payoff. Certainly no friendly back and forth. I have to believe Gabe is doing some fence mending now. You don't keep poking at somebody who isn't responding without it being sharking, intentional sharking in my opinion.

As for all of the "kid" talk, I would rather fight a sixty year old man than a nineteen year old. The nineteen year old is much closer to his peak.

I was a pretty hardened player and gambler by sixteen. I had thousands of match-ups and quite a few fights by nineteen. I had even smoothed out my act by nineteen, rarely having gambling related issues after the first couple years.


I made it to Hawaii for a few weeks when I was nineteen or twenty, no gambling though. Visiting a brother stationed there.

Well back in the day Rick Hodge was king of the small tournaments surrounding Seattle Tacoma. Cole Dickson was the white boy from Oakland, after hours conversation once led to the posturing of a mma weigh in. Cole had his beer bottle concealed behind his leg. Rick was Golden gloves boxer. 🤔 glad I didn't have to see. As they decided to uh co exist.

It amazes me at times how similar many of the backgrounds are on players from that era. The attraction towards certain personality types being a standard.

Really great points. I once lost a custom cue that I really loved, at age 15, because the guy who was staking me (who was my doubles partner), decided that he was not going to pay for my end of the bet, so I had to give up my cue, because I did not have the cash to pay. Point being, even at age 15, I was not treated as a kid, and I was old enough to understand that I had to pay the bet off, in some way.

Oh, and at 15, I knew the right way to treat my opponents, no matter how little we were playing for. When ever it was not my turn, I would remain seated, and not do anything (intentionally) to cause any distractions, while my opponent was shooting, or getting ready to shoot. Even when just playing for fun, I always treated my opponent with respect, and took the game seriously. But, when playing in a tournament, or for anything, it is really a no no, to not show the utmost respect for your opponent, and treat them the way that you would want and expect to be treated, while at the table, looking it over, about to shoot, or down on the shot shooting. Even after they are done shooting, you should treat your opponent in a respectful manor.

I didn't watch the match or hear exactly what JA said afterward. But a future threat of a slap isn't much of a threat in my book. In the old days, if you threaten to slap another man you'd get laughed at.

I do not think it was really a threat though. He stated that if it ever happened again, then he would slap the guy. And, yeah, I think that words are just words, until they become real violence. Maybe the kid deserves to get slapped though, if he was trying to shark Johnny. I do not think it would change the way a person behaves though. It would take a lot more then just a slap in the face.

And, like Johnny said, the Sharking was not even needed, because the kid was such a heavy favorite to win. Johnny was saying that he would have had to play perfect (in order to win, or have a chance), because the kid was playing so good.

Not necessarily. Uh oh Gramps is having a flashback. Okay the story 😉
It was at the seed 2 in Bellevue. We were in a money game, the wife and I. The soon to be husband for our daughter was engaged in sharking the wife. As she had jacked him up regarding her daughter and her displeasure with his behavior regarding same.
He was proud of his being able to distract with antics.
I spoke up to encourage him to ...uh knock it off. We was across the table from me and gave me the smirk. You know the adolescent response when they think they are Big Boys.
I stopped retrieving the balls and looked him right in the eye and offered to, "Slap that Smirk right off your face." It was no brag just fact. His face changed immediately and he receeded from the table to whisper to his wing man. I heard his wingman say, "it's under the seat in the truck."

The thing about Fargo, is that it does not matter how long of a break you have taken from the game, your Fargo remains the same, until you have competed again, in a Fargo event. And, I am not sure, but Johnny may only be competing in bar table tournaments, in recent times.

I see that he is playing pretty good on the bar table, so he may have been able to win the match, if it would have been on a bar table. Or, it may have been a much closer of a match. I do not know though.

Also, I see that Gabe has a fairly low number of games in the Fargo system, so most of his playing might just be gambling, and not in Fargo system tournaments.

Gabriel Martinez from New Braunfels TX is a 741. His one year older brother, Lazaro Martinez III (Lil Laz) is a 746 and has played in several pro tournaments.
