joint and shaft don't match up?

I just aquired a custom cue and my Predator shaft overlaps the edge of the joint about 1/16th of an inch uniformly. Will this affect the functionality of the cue, and or shaft? Also, if I buy a Predator partial and have it custom fit to the cue will it play totally different than the Predator shaft i'm used to playing with due to being turned down and reduced in diameter? What can I expect to pay to have a Predator partial custom fit(minus the cost of the partial which I will supply)?

Thanks for any help on this matter...

this cue has a used predator on it
i went thru the same problem
the tapping of the predator was offcenter about 8/1000ths
i had to bore it and plug it with phenolic
drill/bore & tap threads

you've got a different problem. Mine is centered. My problem is that the circumference of the Predator ring is larger than the cue joint...

sorry, i misunderstood
haven't had enough coffee to function yet :D
if you have the ability to spin the shaft you can sand it down
unfortunately you will lose the logo
my personal playing cue has a predator that i got later
it's also larger in diameter than butt, but, since the cue is for sale, i'm not going to alter the shaft to fit it, so i can use the predator on something else
i try to ignore it
mine is 40/1000ths difference

It can be matched to fit your cue perfectly. The amount of work depends on how well It matches your cue already.
If it rolls straight with the ferrule like it is now, then I would say the only real differences may be a hair of extra weight You have now, and a higher risk of chipping the edge of the face of your shaft or It snagging on something. Could be said that removel of the material may promote more flex in that area, but My personal feeling is It is a really slight change, and that any weight reduction would somewhat even It out, and keep It in check, so I'm not sure how much difference in feel there would be, unless refacing was done and It cleaned the face up, resulting in better face to face surface contact, but I would think that would Be a pluss, and not a negative thing anyhow, if it were done properly that is. The amount of balance change would be determained by the amount of material removed, but probably would'nt make a noticable difference in alot of cases.

I know plenty of people that don't have them matched to their cues though, and they play fine just like they are with them. The thing Is- if the shaft is switched from one cue to another, then may be better to leave it big, that way the butt joints are protected and never larger then the shaft collar, because If the butt side is bigger then the shaft, It's really alot easier to snag the butt on the hard edge of a table and damage the face on it.

If they are off centered like Brent mentioned, or not installed square with the face and ferrule, then alittle more work is required to may It work.

I charge 200.00 for a predator shaft blank fitted to peoples cues and using matching deco-rings. This makes the shaft an exact fit and looks as if it is an original shaft. I figure that is around the price they would pay for a shaft on the Internet with a general deco-ring and fit. I don't use customer furnished parts any longer. If customers want to save money buying raw materials themselves then I figure I'll let them save even more money and let them go buy a lathe and spray equipment to do the whole job.

I know what you mean. I have a 3/8x10 Gilbert that the shaft fits perfectly so I don't want to ruin it. That is why I would have another one made specifically for the cue in question...

Opinions aside could you measure in thousands what the diameter of the joint collar of the butt is...I'm curious as to why it's so small...

sorry, I don't have the equiptment to measure it in 1000ths

As Craig says, you must have an awfully small joint for the shaft to overhang that much. At 1/16 all the way around the butt joint would have to be extremely small. Not having actually measured the difference though, it is probably not nearly a 1/16 as you believe. I have found that people can feel very small differences in sizes and if not accustomed to making these judgements, often, a few thousands can feel like much more.
