With the ivory ban affecting us,having a cue made, flat face 3/8x10 ivory joint.I been researching Camel Bone Ivory, and White Hollywood as a alternate material to use in lieu of ivory. question:
1)which material of the two would you use for joint and inlay on a cue
2) the difference between each material, strength wise over time
3) What other option can I use,I don't want to use any form of plastic in the joint area.
Any help is appreciated

Why not Juma or Elforyn?

Joint material

for the joint, they are both a form of plastic,am I correct. The ivory is a natural material therefore I want to replace the joint with a natural material. Been playing with ivory joint most of my life, love the feeling, the feedback, the hit, plus it looks great with ebony. I'm spending 4K on my playing cue, have no intentions of using plastic on the cue. I been waiting a long time for this cue,I will never have the chance to have another cue made by this cue maker in my lifetime. Hopefully you will understand, thank you for the help

Where are you having it made where Ivory isn't an option? I thought the only regs where in Ca.. Brian.

Good luck in finding camel bone for joint size .
Antler/stag is your best bet as mentioned by Starkey.

I don't know if you consider micarta as plastic too.

Holly ? They're softer than melamine or juma.

Thanks to everyone for the information.Joel is going to let me know what is our options. He stated that I can use ivory but I need to pick up the cue at his shop.

moose

I'm going to start expirimenting with moose bones. Leg bones, hips, ball and sockets - everything. Not just antler. It is the biggest, heaviest animal in my state - it's gotta be hard. Remember not to bleach anything! It will degrade the material. Bleach is destructive stuff...

Ivory

Hi Charlie,
what do you have on order now lol

Frank, good hearing from you, what room to you playpool, get together and play some.I have a Joel Hercek being made in his current batch,he called yesterday and explained my options in reference to the ivory laws.He is making a four point ebony, four veneers, curly maple forearm.ebony hoppe butt,no bumper.Ivory joint and ivory inlays. If I use ivory I have to drive to Joel's shop to pick up the cue when it's completed.I researching a replacement for the ivory.Joel suggest using silver,MOP,gold for the inlays. That about it,some advice is appreciated
Charlie

Charlie.
When I read your post. I had that feeling you were building another cue.
It will be hard on you not using Ivory. I bet your grandchild's cue doesn't have
one tear drop of plastic. LOL
call me.

I'll bet it will be sweet. JMO, If I could afford to have Joel build me a 4K cue, I would probably say to myself, "I should have him do ivory like I want and go pick it up. I can afford it" LOL. Good luck and hope to see pictures when you get it.

Not a big poster on this board but felt like i had to chime in. Regaurdless of distance or cost I could not imagine passing up the opertunity to tour Joel's shop... wow... the road trip there would be filled with anticipation and nerves to see the final product and get your hands-on it... the ride home would have it strapped carefully into the front seat close enough to pet when the need arose... Mile after mile Smile after smile. Ivory joint inlays and all... How could a road trip get any better....

I had the last cue built with Elk Horn joint and ferrules, love them!

Pardon my ignorance here, but are fossil (mammoth or walrus) ivories, hippo or warthog not viable? None of these are affected by the new Fed rules afaik.

You can get white/cream interior mammoth that's quite solid and visually very similar to elephant.

I'm going to take the ride to Joel's shop with my friend Little Kenny
