Joint Pin Characteristics

I simply want a short description for the use and playability for the following joint pins. Include cuemakers that are know for using each in their standard joints:

(a) 3/8” – 10


(b) 5/16” – 14


(c) 5/16” - 18

To tell the truth, the joint screw only has one purpose....TO HOLD THE 2 PARTS TOGETHER. It doesn't add or detract to the playability of the Q. The 3/8"-10 generally screws directly into the wood of the shaft & gives a SLIGHTLY softer hit. The other 2 have a bushing in the shaft, that the screw tightens up to. The material used for the joint collars, will affect the hit more than the screw type. For examole a 3/8"-10 screw with a steel collar, will have a different feel, than one with an Ivory joint...JER
P.S. The 3/8"-10 steel or aluminum screw, is the only one I use in my BLACK HEART CUES.

I use the 3/8 - 10 in 98% of the cues I build. Just like the feel it produces in my cues.

I am actually glad this thread came up. :)

My husband announced last night that he wants a breaking shaft for his cue, Or, a thinner playing shaft. Anyway, because It is a SS-jointed cue, I just assumed that he had a 5/16 - 14 pin. I just pulled it out and compared to my cue which does have a 5/16 - 14 pin and noticed that while the pin size appears to be the same, the pin is slightly longer than mine. Does this mean that he has a 5/16 - 18 pin? I have only had cues with either the 5/16 - 14 or 3/8 -10 pin sizes.

The thread count is the number of threads per inch. A 5/16-14 pin is 5/16 inch wide and has 14 threads per inch. The length of the pin itself is determined by how far it in screwed into the cue. For example, my SP has a 3/8-10 pin but its slightly longer than most other pins i see.

Thank you so much for clarifying that for me! The threads are identically spaced, so I will measure, but will assume that they it is a 5/16 - 14 pin as well, just not mounted as far into the forearm as my cue's is. It was an inexpensive custom off of eBay. What can I say, he just loves that cue!!
