The 38th Annual Jointed Cue Results & payouts:
1st - Billy Palmer $1300
2nd - Damian Overton $900
3rd - Austin Murphy $600
4th - Tinsley Johnson $400
5/6th - Dave Vincent/Joey Gebron
7/8th - Ernesto Dominguez/Kevin McLaughlin
The annual tournament, which is now the Terry Stonier Memorial, had 114 players this year. It is always a great tournament, and most of the top spots were won by locals. Billy has been on a tear lately and pulled this one out after a slow start. Two of us (yes I'm talking about this old dog) had him down 5 to 2 in a race to 6 and couldn't put him away. He settled down by the end of the tournament and survived a couple of tough matches to win it. Damian is one of the new breed of converted English snooker players and he made Billy earn his money. A true double elimination tournament, Damian won the first set and finally got beat 6 to 4 in the final match. Austin, who is 13 years old, wasn't far away from winning the whole thing. The match for the hot seat with Billy was a close one that could have gone either way. He lost hill/hill to Damian when Damian double kissed a safety play and the kiss resulted in hooking Austin. Kim Davenport's record of 9 wins in this tournament may be in danger a few years from now.
While I would liked to have played better myself, and have had several better finishes over the years, I may have enjoyed this tournament as much as any of them. Two days of pool, listening to war stories, telling war stories, eating their famous cheeseburgers and visiting with old friends and players I have mixed it up with many times over the years. One of the differences now is we don't stay up gambling all night and then play.
Tony Annigoni and I wishing we still played two shot shootout. It wouldn't work here, the tournament would take a week and with 114 players, and it has had 130+, this works fine the way it is. Listening to The Tooth tell his stories. I first saw The Tooth in the early sixties and still enjoy hearing them. I believe if he lost his voice, I could finish telling some of them for him, but it wouldn't be the same. Seeing my old friends James and Al from LA who have been coming up here longer than I have. Another old friend who also has been coming for years and may not see another one. He still played in it and I think it meant more to him this year than we will ever know. Assistant Tournament Director Angel and his brother who had to play each other after a few rounds. Neither wanted to win or to lose. It was a special moment and you had to be there. And Murphy, who has been the Tournament Director as long as I can remember. Didn't mean this to be so long, but don't miss this tournament if you get a chance to play in it. It is pool in an old time pool room with a lot of history. John Henderson
