I have never shot with a joss cue and lately I have been trying new cues out so I purchased a color of money replica on ebay a few days ago. I am curious about any info on the cue, like year it was made, etc? I am pretty sure it is an N7 and I am also sure this is not the original shaft. I think I am going to have to pick up another shaft so my next question is what shaft would have come with this cue? What in your opinion is the best shaft to try to get for this cue? Maybe an old gold letter joss shaft? Your thoughts and opinions are appreciated. Thanks.

That does sure look like the N7. Joss has been selling that cue for awhile. I would guess they have made it for a large number of years. I have owned several Joss cues and they always have had a number on the SS joint. You can probably take that number and call Dan Janes and see if he can look it up.

Personally speaking I loved how the OB1 shaft played on the Joss cues I have owned.

Hard to say what year it was made.

Looks like a $20 J&J shaft in the picture.

I would say---try a Tiger-X Ultra.

Contact Jumpin Joe on AZBilliards for your best price.

I'd at least want to hit with a Joss shaft before rushing to buy aftermarket.
Whatever works for you.

Don't know what year Joss started engraving their joints, but I have a N7 from the '90's with no markings.

Yeah but a Tiger-X Ultra will be the same price as a new Joss shaft and will stay straight with a warranty to boot. No warranty on a Joss shaft after you chalk it up. :sorry:

when you get the cue you can call joss with the ser# on the cue and he will tell you the year month& day it was made phone#1800 245 5677

That shaft does have a funny look to it, I have not seen a Joss shaft that did not have the thread insert poking out a few mm. The ebay person you got it from could have changed the $100+ Joss shaft for a $20 cheapo.

Actually the seller from Ebay is one of the best ebayers I've ever dealt with. He is the most honest and always had the best deals.

This is my opinion from all my deals with this seller.

Okay...not an opinion but fact.

Shaft is a clunker . . .

Proper shaft for a Joss cue is a piloted 5/16-14 thread . . . the pilot extends outward from the threads of the joint on the shaft, and goes down into the void in the joint of the butt. This fills the void, and makes the shaft to butt joint more "filled" (solid). Shaft you show is un-piloted.

Like the above posters stated, get yourself a low-deflection Tiger, OB, Pred, etc. or just call Dan Janes, ship him the butt and have him make you a top quality shaft. Problem solved for many years to come.

No need to ship the butt to Janes. All JOSS shafts are interchangeable since very early. In fact JOSS was one of the first, if the the first, cue makers to standardize their joint. All you have to do is order a JOSS shaft if you want one. It will fit.

Finally something I can add too!

First off joint number to Dan to square away the year.

Second the first COM cues were J-18 models and the newer ones are N-7's. I believe Joss switched the model number in the early 90's.

Chopdoc is right about the joints as far as interchangeability. 5/16-14 piloted shafts will work. Ld shafts of any make with same joint will work, I myself use a BDCues SS360 shaft on mine

Real Joss shafts shoot just as good. I happened to pick up 2 with my N-7 and like them just as much as my SS360 tho they are thicker. Not bad, just different as my SS360 is a 12.5mm.

Now to comparisons... My N-7 is a newer model and my ring around the butt where the Joss name is is not all white. It is a white ring in ebony with the Joss name. Joss has been running them this way for at least 5 years that I know of which puts some age on your cue, how old? Not a J-18, but still older none the less.

Any billiard retailer can get you a Joss shaft to the tune of about a buck and half shipped. An ld shaft to fit will be around the same and higher depending on who made it.

Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, I've been researching this cue for months and have been given great info from collectors, azbers and Joss themselves :)

Also this cue pictured has a black wrap, not the standard white with black speck. Could have been re-wrapped but standard N-7's come stock with the white variant wrap. Joss did make a big joint variation of the same cue with black wrap...
