Turning Stone Classic VII Announced

The Joss Northeast 9-Ball Tour is proud to announce that Turning Stone Resort and Casino (Verona NY) will be once again the site of our 2005/2006 season finale.

The $25,000 added Turning Stone Classic VII 9-Ball Open will be held on August 17th thru 20th 2006. All players are welcome to compete with entry fees as follows: $150 for all 2005/2006 Joss Northeast 9-Ball Tour members and $200 for all others. Once again the field will be limited to the first 128 paid entrants. All of our previous 6 events at Turning Stone have filled to capacity so I strongly suggest you enter now to avoid being shut out.

To enter you must contact Mike Zuglan at 518-356-7163. Summer is a busy time at Turning Stone. The week of our event is the same week they hold their major poker tournaments. They also have 5 world class golf courses which are packed all summer long. All of the players in our event will receive a substantial discount on hotel rooms. However our "block" of rooms will only be held for so long before they go back into circulation for other guests at the regular price. This is another reason to enter early.

It should also be noted that because Turning Stone is a "dry" casino and does not serve alcohol, you only need to be 18 years old to gamble in the casino or play poker. For those 21 or older it is OK to bring your own alcoholic beverages as long as you behave properly. Turning Stone also has some of the finest restaurants in upstate NY. They have everything you need to have the most enjoyable experience imaginable. If you have not been to Turning Stone has one of our players, spectators or just a visitor you simply don't know what you are missing.

I have been told by virtually everyone that this is the best venue for an event such as ours. And, as has always been the case, there will be FREE SPECTATOR ADMISSION for all!

I just talked to Mike Zuglan today, and he said that to date, 105 players are in and paid in full, with the field limited to 128 in total. I think they will post a list of players closer to the date of the actual tournament in mid August.

Unfortunately, the Philippine 9-ball Championship will be taking place during the same dates as the Turning Stone Classic VII event.

The first official national Philippine 9-ball Championship will take place on August 15th-20th, 2006 in Manila and 64 of the top Filipino players are expected to be in attendance including Reyes, Bustamante, Pagulayan, Parica, Manalo, Luat, Alcano, Kiamco, Lining, Orcullo along with the rest of the Filipino contingent.

Santos Sambajon will remain in the US and compete in International Challenge of Champions event at the Mohegan Sun Casino on August 9th & 10th and then again at the Turning Stone Classic VII on August 17th thru 20th.

The Philippine Star - 05/10/2006

The honor, prestige and bragging rights of being the first official national champion — and the P1 million top prize to go with it — will be at stake in the Philippine 9-ball Championship on Aug. 4th -20th, 2006 at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium.

A total of 64 of the country’s top cue artists are expected to battle it out in the event sanctioned and organized by the Billiards and Snooker Congress of the Philippines, BSCP officials announced yesterday at the PSA forum at the Pantalan Restaurant function room in Manila.

"This the first time that the BSCP is conducting an official tournament to crown a national champion," said BSCP chairman Yen Makabenta, who appeared in the session sponsored by the Manila Sports Council and Pagcor together with BSCP president Ernie Fajardo and secretary-general Julius Nidea.

"Before this, we only had exhibition tournaments organized by private promoters, and they were not truly representative and comprehensive," Makabenta added.

Fajardo said the event, which also serves as the country’s dress rehearsal for the World Pool Championship, has a lot more to offer to the campaigning billiards players.

"The tournament will send the champion and runner-up to the 2006 World Pool Championship that will held at the Philippine International Convention Center in November. It also serves as one of the BSCP’s criteria for the national team to the Doha Asian Games in December," Fajardo said.

On the other hand, Nidea said the RP-9 Ball Championship was conceived so that not only the established stars such as Efren "Bata" Reyes, Alex "The Lion" Pagulayan and Francisco "Django" Bustamante would shine, but also enable the promising players to show their mettle.

Patterned after the US 9-ball Open, Nidea said that the 64 players go through a double-round elimination stage, which will also include a losers’ and a winners’ bracket.

"What makes this format exciting is that all 64 players will be slugging it out from the very beginning until we finally come up with a true national champion," Makabenta said.

The BSCP officials said the country’s top 12 players, based on their performance in international and national tournaments, will be invited to the event and awarded the proper seedings.

Then another 30 slots will be made up of what in billiards parlance is described as the "pang-primera, pang-segunda and panercera (Groups 1, 2 and 3)" players in the country," they said.

Another 10 slots will be allotted to recognized provincial and regional champions while the remaining 12 slots will be contested in a qualifying tournament two weeks before the RP 9-ball championship, they added.

A total pot of P2 million, considered once of the biggest in local billiards competition, will be up for grabs, with the P1 million to the champion, P500,000 to the second placer, and P150,000 each for third and fourth place.

In the event that the winner and runner-up of the blue-ribbon tourney are already seeded to the World 9-ball tourney, Makabenta said that the next two will automatically gain entry into the Manila world championship.

"As much as possible, we would like as much opportunity to our local players to vie in the World Championship," said Makabenta, whose Raya Sports has won the rights to stage the "Olympics" of billiards.

Bump up to top

Just talked with Mike last night and he has 116 Paid players with 9 more in the mail. That only leaves 3 SPOTS OPEN... you had better get your money in if you want to play. Mike Also has a bus trip going there on Saturday. So if you are coming from Mass or Vermont or Conn. for the day. bus leaves Mike's pool room at 8am and returns at 8pm back to the pool room Get a hold of Mike and make arrangements to pay the 25.00 for the bus ride and park in his pool halls parking lot. REMEMBER that SOMEONE on the bus WILL WIN A $300.00 Joss cue. Plus you get a food coupon worth $10.00 plus another one for gambling. 25.00 i think....so come have some fun and have a ball riding with pool players.......................mike
