Joss vs Joss West

So then a JOSS that has the engraved "JOSS" on the derlin looking butt, is one made by both individials? Or only by Dan?

It's not that straight forward.

The "block letter" JOSS cues you are talking about were Made from 68 through the end of the 70's.

JOSS has always been a Janes outfit and his original partner was Stroud. I believe his next partner was Scruggs.

Others that worked at the JOSS shop were Cochran and Frey I think, although I am not 100% sure. They both worked with Scruggs so the connection is there. Mike Sigel worked there as well.

So, if you have a "block letter" JOSS it definitely was made by some very prominent cue makers regardless of what year it was made or which makers worked there at the time.

The later JOSS cues carry the same pedigree, whether you buy one off the shelf or have it made by Janes.

To be sure, the pedigree of these cues is impeccable.

The best shaft I have is on my Joss that is about 5 years old. I can't explain what it is about that shaft but everyone who has used it wants to buy it. I have been offered as much for the shaft as I paid for the entire cue.

I have used other Joss cues but haven't came across a shaft that equals it.

Wow.

Yeah, shafts are like that.

Even an expert maker with a lot of experience selecting shaft wood does not always get a great shaft at the end.

When you find one like that, hold onto it.
