Hi,

How do Juma ferrules hit ( Hard, Med, Soft )? I have been using Juma for building cues but it seems to be very soft when I machine it.

How does it hit compared to Ivory?

Any info would be appreciated.

I have done a few cues using it for a joint collar and do not notice a soft hit. A ferrule might be a different matter though.

Juma Ferrule

I play with Juma ferrules and I've built my first few cues using Juma ferrules and I don't think that they play very soft. I would personally describe the hit as a medium hit from the Juma ferrules. I first played with Juma on a Barnhart cue, and with the stiff taper they compliment those types of cues very well.

Rick... I know you have offered up a ton of valuable info anytime that I have asked a question, so I would be more than happy to send you a Juma ferrule or two if you want to try one out...

Thanks,

Spencer

I also play with Juma ferrules on my cues. I have a Jensen and Schon as players that I have built shafts for myself as well as some cues I have built all using Juma. I would agree that the hit is more in the medium range

I love JUMA ferrules. They are my standard ferrule material for the last 2 years. I think they have a medium hit. They stay very clean & free of chalk. Ivory is definitly much harder...JER

Thanks Spencer,

I have installed many Juma ferrules on cue repair projects and have plenty in stock. On my cues I have been using mostly Ivory and some Titan in the past.

My cues are designed for a very stiff hit and I like the Ivory sound and stroke feed back because of that material. I figured that the Juma would be a lot softer than the Ivory naturally, but I just wanted to get some feed back.

I will stick with Ivory but I need to have something else that will give me that kind of sound and feel. I am building a cue for an overseas customer and I don't wish to ship ivory because of the rules.

I don't like the Titan because of how it looks down the road and some of the other materials seem to get dirty.

I think I have used most of the ferrule materials but need to make a decision on this matter.

Ivory looks the best polished, machines awesome, and keeps your cue looking 1st class in the field when they are cleaned up from time to time.

The Juma seems to not get dirty but it does not polish and present like ivory.

I am a bad pool player and my stroke is intermittent to say the least. I know that some of the cue makers hear are very good pool players as well as builders and any other suggestions for a stiff hitting ferrule that presents and cleans up well would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Rick

Have you ever used an Ivor-X ferrule? They hit pretty firm, stay clean, machine and polish up nicely IMHO.

Orig. Aegis is an excellent substitute for ivory with regards to the hit.
It's a linen base so it would have to be sealed w/CA to resist chalk.
Aegis-2 is a little softer IMO but still decent mtrl.
Good LBM isn't all that bad either.
BTW, if anyone has any orig. Aegis, I'd be interested.

Rick, the color may not be what you want, but if you are looking for a good hard hit that Micarta from Mason is the ticket.

Otherwise, LBM or Aegis would be my choice.

I think the other thing that you will have to ask yourself with these other materials is whether you want to install the ferrule capped or uncapped? That is going to make a difference in the way any of them play. I personally prefer uncapped ferrules. Being that you primarily use ivory, I'll be you like the capped variety.

Anybody else have an opinion about capped vs uncapped?

I would call the hit medium soft. It has a fairly natural hit. It does not increase the cue ball spin as much as many of the other softer hitting ferrules do, (like ABS for instance).
Ivory has a much harder hit.

I've put about a dozen Juma threaded and capped ferrules on in the last year. They machine and look very nice. That said, I have gotten 2 of them back that were cracked. I know they were a tight thread because I machine my own. That spooked me enough that I haven't put one on since. If I don't get any more back I may try again at a later date.

I personally like the hit of ivory. How about buckhorn as an alternative?
