This is not correct. First let me make it clear there are 2 different phenolics being used by makers. One is the standard phenolic like Fury originally used. These don't hold chalk well and are a bit brittle. I've seen many different versions from different makers develop cracks or explode into pieces.
The better choice is the canvas-resin. Its basically a phenolic with a strong canvas weave impregnated into the material. The canvas makes it much more durable...even bulletproof if you will. I give a lifetime warranty on mine. The canvas also will fuzz up a bit and when combined with grooves cut into the crown will allow it to hold chalk very well...ask anyone who uses one.
